Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete Medieval lead seal matrix, flat and in the shape of a pointed oval (vesica). The inscription reads: +S' ALIC' FIL' AGNET around a central motif probably of a stylised fleur de lys consisting of a central raised vesica with a triangle below and a pellet to either side. The inscription roughly translates as 'Seal of Alice, daughter of Agnes', with Agnet being a known variant of this name at this time and into later periods. The semi-circular suspension lug on the reverse forms part of a raised fleur-de-lys decoration. Seals of this style usually date from the 13th centur…

Near complete but damaged lead-alloy personal seal matrix of Medieval date. The seal is a flat pointed oval in plan (vesica-shaped). The front carries a central design, possibly of an elongated fleur-de-lys, with lettering around the edge. The inscription is very clear, and reads + S' MARGERIE FIL' BRVN (Seal of Margery daughter of Brun). The reverse of the matrix bares no trace of a raised mid-rib or suspension loop. Matrices of this type are typically dated c.1200-1300. Brun is a rare Old English personal name.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete undated lead weight. The weight is sub-spherical with a central perforation. Although small it could have functioned as a spindle whorl but it is more likely that the hole through the centre of the weight allowed it to be threaded onto something such as a line or net. The weight has no decoration on the outside. Diameter 18.04mm, thickness 15.11mm, diameter of perforation c5.4-6.1mm, weight 24.9g. Lead weights of this type, when found outside of an archaeological context, are notoriously difficult to date. It is also rarely possible to assign a specific function to these …

Complete but worn Medieval cast lead alloy personal seal matrix; pointed oval (vesica) shaped, 13th century. The central device is an elongated fleur-de-lys. The inscription is set between grooved borders, and isdifficult to read. The letters + SIGILL [...] ALICIE (Seal of Alice) can be made out, with at least two letters invisible after SIGILL (possibly the VM that would complete the word SIGILLVM). The reverse has a central mid rib running the length with a suspension loop at one end. Seals of women are surprisingly common.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Medieval to Post Medieval cast lead alloy uniface circular probable token or possible weight. The token has a thicker than is usual flan (5mm) hence the suggestion that it could be a weight. The design consists of a raised cross design, with a raised pellet in each angle and also an additional raised elongated oval pellet in two of the angles. Such designs are sometimes suggested to be imitations of Medieval long cross pennies. The reverse is blank. Lead tokens are difficult to date precisely and could be Medieval to Post Medieval in date (1250-1800 AD). Cross and pellet designs …

Two complete but worn cast lead spindle whorls of probable Medieval date. The whorls are circular in plan and bi-convex in section with a central circular perforation. Both faces of each whorl are decorated with linear designs some of which may or may not be intended to represent lettering but this is too worn to be legible. Cast lead weights, including whorls are difficult to date with accuracy. Lead whorls were in use from as early as the 10th century to at least the 14th century, but there are only two decorated whorls from good dated contexts, both of which were medieval. The…

A complete but worn cast lead token of post Medieval date. The token carries lettering on the front which may be AA, a disjointed W or VV. Lead tokens are very difficult to date precisely but those carrying lettering are usually dated to the post Medieval period with the majority falling into the 17th century. The precise use of such tokens is unknown and it is likely that they were produced locally and had a variety of uses as tokens, tallies, weights, gaming pieces, etc. Tokens of this type are dated rather broadly c. AD 1600-1800.

A complete cast lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is circular in plan with a large circular perforation off-centre. There is no decoration. The perforation is 7.5mm in diameter. It is difficult to assign specific uses to such simple weights and although it could have been used as a loom weight it may have served many other uses. Simple, undecorated lead weights of this type are notoriously difficult to date and therefore the date is given as uncertain.

A complete cast lead weight, possible spindle whorl of uncertain date. The weight is circular in plan and domed in profile with a perforation in the centre. There is no decoration. The perforation is 2.5mm in diameter and appears to have been drilled from either side giving an hour glass profile to the sides of the perforation making it less likely that this has been used as a spindle whorl. Simple, undecorated lead weights of this type are notoriously difficult to date and therefore the date is given as uncertain.

Probable Post Medieval cast lead uniface token. The token carries a stylised design of a spread-eagled bird looking right. The reverse is plain. Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as use as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Those carrying intials are generally deemed to be Post Medieval in date (1500-1850 AD), those which seem to mimic Medieval penny designs are deemed to be Medieval, the remainder which carry stylised designs remain difficult to date but the…

Complete cast lead probable weight or possible spindle whorl of uncertain date. The item is a flat cylinder with a central perforation. There has been some damage to the item and it is unclear whether the central perforation was originally mis-shapen, if so then it would not have functioned as a spindle whorl and must be classed as a weight of uncertain usage. Weights of this type are notoriously difficult to date when found outside of a datable archaeological context. Similar examples have been found in contexts dated from the Roman era through to the Post-Medieval period alth…

Complete cast lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval date. The whorl is biconical in form with a central perforation. There is an inscription formed of raised lettering on both sides of the whorl. One side reads IESVS (Jesus) with the first S back to front and an initial mark between the second S and the J which is possibly a skull. The inscription on the second side has proved more difficult to decipher due to idiosyncratic lettering and wear. The probable reading of this word is MARIA (Mary) although the M is formed as a heart shape, the first A & R are possibly transposed with…
