Medieval weight; Cast lead weight of bell shape: The weight is essentially a circular cone, although it flares out towards the bottom and is flattened at the top. It has a curved suspension loop at the top, formed from a strap of lead, and is pierced in the centre of the base. The weight looks to have been reshaped after casting, although this is difficult to determine as it is also somewhat pitted and gouged across its surface. The lead has a white patina, of varying thickness. Height 41.3mm, width (“diameter”) 33.4mm, weight 185.3g Lead weights are difficult to date due the…

Possible medieval weight; Cast lead disc which may be a weight. The weight is circular with cast relief decoration on one face. The design seems to show a beast rampant, facing left in the centre with an inscription around the edge. Corrosion and wear have unfortunately rendered the inscription illegible. The reverse side has a small circular hole in the centre but is otherwise undecorated. This may be comparable to the weight shown in Biggs & Withers ‘Lead Weights; The David Rogers Collection’ as number 33, on page 23, although that example is much larger and heavier. Diamet…

The weight has a small, rectangular hole pierced through it above the lion’s head. The design is very worn. The metal has a thick, white-grey patina over its surface. Medieval weight; cast lead shield-shaped weight of probable 15th century date. Large weight with a narrower outer border and raised inner shield. The shield is very worn but has indications of three horizontal motifs, suggesting the three leopards of England. The back face is flat and undecorated. The whole has a thick, white-brown patina, except for two areas on the front face where the surface has been scraped off, presumably whilst the weight was buried. Length 62.6mm, width 55.8mm, thickness 22.5mm, weight c.490g

Possible lead weight; small sub-circular lead object, possibly a weight. The artefact is concave on one face and slightly convex on the opposite face. It is covered over all surfaces with a thick, chalky, grey-white patina. Diameter 19.0mm, thickness 12.5mm, weight 25.35g Spindle whorls are very difficult to date as objects of similar design were in use for many centuries. Lead spindle whorls have been dated to all times between the Roman period and the early Post Medieval period.

Medieval weight; cast lead standing weight of probable medieval date. The weight is roughly a rectangular pyramid with a hole pierced through the top to make a suspension loop, probably for safekeeping (as Biggs suggests). It is undecorated. The metal has a thick, grey-white patina over its surface, which is somewhat pitted throughout. Medieval standing weight; pair of cast lead weights of probable medieval date. The weights are of flat, triangular, prismatic shape and are both pierced from apex to base with a small, circular hole. The two weights are of almost identical shape and style and have a similar thick, grey-brown patina over their surfaces. They were also found in very close proximity to each other, all of which suggests that they formed, or were part of, a set of weights for weighing different quantities of substances. Medieval weight; cast lead pendant weight, maybe for a fishing net or similar. The weight is long and biconical, giving a roughly lozenge-shaped cross section at the widest point and tapering to a circular cross-section at the bottom end. The top end is flattened and pierced with a circular hole, giving a pointed suspension loop. It is difficult to date weights of this type with any accuracy due to their simple construction, lack of distinguishing features and the fact that similar weights were in use for many centuries. However, a weight of this shape can be roughly dated to the me…

Post medieval weight; cast copper alloy trade weight of Charles I or II, dating from 1625-1685. The weight is circular with a raised lip around the edge on one face. Both faces have a small circular indent at the centre. The face with the lip is stamped on the lower section with three marks – the crowned letter ‘C’ indicating the monarch, the ewer of the Founders’ Company and the sword which is the City of London (Guildhall) mark. Medieval trade weight; cast lead object, most likely a standing trade weight of the rough period 12th-15th century. The object is a rectangular pyramid of lead. At the apex, the sides have been pulled upwards to form two extensions. These have been broken off but it seems likely that they were formed into an attachment loop. The weight is decorated with incised lines forming a grid across the four sides of its surface. There is a pellet in each square of the grid. The base of the pyramid has rough scratches, approximating a grid similar to that on the sides, and four indents. The whole…
