Spindle whorl; cast lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. The whorl is biconical in shape with a large, roughly circular hole through the centre. Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Roman object; cast copper alloy object of uncertain function but probable Roman date. The object is a spiral of copper alloy, forming three ridges with a decorative knop at the top corner. The knop appears to have originally been quatripartite but one of the lobes is now missing. The object has a D-shaped hole through the centre, which is now blocked with a powdery pale green substance, possibly the remains of a paste or a large build-up of copper corrosion product. The function of this object is unclear and no close parallels have come to light. However, the patina of the copper allo…

County: Nottinghamshire

Weight; cast lead suspension weight of uncertain date. The weight is a long, tapering circular cone of lead, with a slight curve to its profile. The circular end is slightly concave and there are traces of iron in the centre of this end, suggesting that it originally had an iron suspension loop embedded in the lead. This indicates that it may have been used as a plumb bob or to weigh down a line or similar. The object is of very simple manufacture and as such it is difficult to make any accurate suggestion about its date of use. Diameter 33.30mm, length 105.58mm, weight 456.4g

Medieval button; cast lead alloy button of possible 14th or 15th century date. The button is a large, circular disc with moulded decoration on one face. The decoration is in the form of a central pellet surrounded by a circle. This circle has a line running from each side to the edge, forming a cross. There are then four curves, one in each interstice of the cross, which are joined to the cross by short lines about halfway along each arm of the cross. Where each line meets the edge of the button there is a pellet and there is a further pellet within each curve. The reverse of the butt…

Unknown object; cast lead alloy object of uncertain function or date. The object is generally rounded but with two sections missing from the full circle. Between the missing sections there is an extended, rounded knop. It is unclear whether this shaping is deliberate or accidental. One face has a profile bust in low relief. The bust is facing left and seems, stylistically, to be of the Victorian era. The other face is undecorated. The function of this object is completely unclear, although one suggestion is that it may have been a seal for something, having had the head impressed when…

An incomplete Medieval pilgrim's souvenir; cast lead ampulla of probable 14th century date. The flask has a pelta-shaped body with a wide neck and flaring mouth. One face of the ampulla is decorated with radiating ridges across the body of the flask, giving it the appearance of a shell. The other face has a motif in low relief which seems to be two concentric inverted Vs with a pattern of lozenges beneath. The interpretation of this symb…
