Object type: HORSESHOE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire

Medieval or post medieval horseshoe; incomplete wrought iron horseshoe of probable late medieval or post medieval date (c.1350-1700). The shoe has a wide web but reasonably narrow span. The interior profile comes to a point at the toe, which is quite common in shoes of this period, especially those slightly narrower shoes intended for the rear hoof. There is no ‘calkin’ or heel at the end of the complete side (the other side being broken off before the heel). Three nails can be seen remaining in situ, the spacing suggesting that there would have been a fourth between them. The corr…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Derbyshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Possible medieval arrowhead or crossbow bolt; Cast iron projectile point of probable 13th –15th century date. It has a narrow point of square cross-section and a long tang of circular cross-section. The surface of the artefact is pitted with corrosion and is starting to flake away. This is reminiscent of the ‘bodkin’ type arrowheads which came into use in the 13th century, replacing the earlier, flat-bladed arrowheads due to their greater efficacy at piercing leather, mail and plate armour. However, the majority of these arrowheads were socketed with the tanged type being far …
