Two Post-Medieval silver cuff links. Two cuff links of identical design. Each is formed of two circular discs with bevelled sides and a lipped rim, joined together by an oval wire link. The face of each disc bears a raised, stamped design of a pair of hearts side by side, surmounted by a jewelled and arched crown set against a faint stippled field, within a raised circular border. At the back of each disc are traces of a corresponding recessed design, obscured by solder for rounded attachment loops. Illegible makers' marks (observable using a microscope) are present at the apex of …

Object type: AXEHEAD ROUGHOUT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Probably a roughout for a Neolithic polished stone axe. It was initailly described as 'A lithic implement considered to be of Acheulian date (Lower Palaeolithic) and also thought to be a handaxe, of ovate form and very regular. It is quite rounded, probably as a result of wear during burial, although a large amount of the creation process is still visible through the removed flake pattern. The flint is of a light fawn colour, but is so patinised that it is hard to estimate its true colour. This noted, it is reckoned that the fawn is the underlying base colour, overlaid by a yellow …

A lithic implement which is considered to be a handaxe of Acheulian date (Lower Palaeolithic). The blade part at the proximal end is regular and symmetrical, while the distal end is quite irregular, forming a shape akin to a scalene triangle. The flint is of a grey colour with some areas covered by a creamy patina, spread over both the dorsal and ventral faces. It is in fair condition, with flake removals remaining clearly visible despite some wear and relatively recent scarring.

A small tertiary flint flake, undiagnostic, and so given a general prehistoric date. It is of a grey brown colour, with some patinisation resulting in a lighter grey patch on both faces, and a darker surround on the dorsal face. There is some edge damage which is estimated to have occured in antiquity, but the flake is in otherwise good condition.

A flint cordate handaxe of Acheulian (early Palaeolithic) date. The handaxe is in excellent condition, and flake removals can still be clearly seen. The flint itself is of a dark grey colour, although there is some patinisation on both the dorsal and ventral faces - of slightly different colours. The patina on the dorsal face presents itself as two distinct creamy patches which are surrounded by a light brown, almost fawn colour. This brown shade extends over onto the ventral face, although it does not cover more than around a third of the surface, as opposed to almost the whole of th…
