Record ID: HAMP-DE4B00
Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded cast copper-alloy gilded mount of post-medieval date. The mount is flat and symmetrical, with rounded terminals and six knopped mouldings: one at each corner and two central. Any decoration on the surface has been hidden by the corrosion. The reverse features a pair of bent, pointed lugs which begin at the extremities of the terminals and curve round towards each other until they almost join. The mount's construction and decoration suggests a c. 17th-century date for it. Such a mount would have probably functioned as a strap fitting.

County: Hampshire

A corroded, flat Roman cast copper alloy pelta-shaped mount. It has a flat lower surface and is bevelled on upper surface. The central 'arm' is bifurcated. The outer arms are rounded. The artefact has corroded to a variable mid-dark green colour. On the lower surface there are traces of an orange-brown corrosion product suggestive of mounting onto iron. Pelta-shaped mounts are associated with the military. A similar artefact has been published as a sword scabbard chape in Appels and Laycock (2007, 48; ref. AA5.27); this recorder is more hesitant.

A corroded, copper-alloy sheet mount of medieval date. The object is cinquefoil in shape with a dome shaped central circular boss; the dome has had a hole punched in the top. Each petal is rounded and is shallowly convex. There seem to be low ribs radiating out from the boss between the petals, these are echoed on the lower surface by scoring. The artefact has a mid/dark-green patina with areas of off-white corrosion product. A mount of similar manufacture, although sexfoil, can be found illustrated in Griffiths et al. (2007, 115; ref. 1048).

A cast copper-alloy broadly circular mount of post-medieval date. The flat mount has six circular perforations which are fairly equally spaced around the circumference; these were drilled through the upper surface. The surface decoration is crudely formed with linear radiating lines around a central 'circle', and punched crescents between their terminals which are misaligned. The reverse features a pair of bent, pointed lugs which are slightly raised. The mount is also raised at the other cardinal points, where two parallel holes have since been drilled, which suggests that the mount …
