Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded but complete cast copper-alloy post-medieval plain double-looped buckle frame with surviving pin. It is trapezoidal, with a flat lower face and an upper face bevelled both internally and externally. This gives the frame a trapezoidal cross-section. The pin bar extends beyond the edge of the frame and terminates at each end with a rounded knopped protrusion. The pin is of looped construction. Viewed in profile one can see that the buckle is bent. Similar buckles can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 82; refs. 506, 507, 509).

A post-medieval cast lead object: a palm guard, for use by a leather worker to protect the palm whilst stitching. In plan it is oval in shape, pointed at one end: it is 55.9mm in length, and 49mm at the widest part. It is convex, with a maximum thickness of about 15.4mm. The domed surface is marked by one incised line at one edge and the flat underside does not seem to have any visible markings. Bailey (1995, 64-65) dates such objects to the 17th century onwards.

A complete cast copper-alloy S-shaped belt hook fastener of late post-medieval to modern date (AD 1700-2000). One end of the fastener terminates in a snake's head while the other terminates in the form of a snake's tail. The fastener has moulded decoration in the form of small pellets which probably were intended to represent scales.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded cast copper-alloy gilded mount of post-medieval date. The mount is flat and symmetrical, with rounded terminals and six knopped mouldings: one at each corner and two central. Any decoration on the surface has been hidden by the corrosion. The reverse features a pair of bent, pointed lugs which begin at the extremities of the terminals and curve round towards each other until they almost join. The mount's construction and decoration suggests a c. 17th-century date for it. Such a mount would have probably functioned as a strap fitting.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date, no longer with its pin attached. There are decorative knops at each corner of the loops, and at either end of the pin bar. Central on each outer edge is a larger, moulded trefoil protrusion. The frame is seemingly internally and externally bevelled on the upper face. The reverse face is flat, giving it a trapezoidal cross-section (with rounded corners). The buckle frame is now worn with a mid/dark-green patina.

A crudely made post-medieval gold finger ring. The hoop is circular and narrows towards the bottom; it is curved in cross-section with the inside of the hoop concave. The square raised bezel has a female portrait facing left, and incuse lettering to either side: the letters appear to be 'RICI' to the left, and 'VI' to the right. Analysis has shown that the ring is composed of 22 carat gold and the ring was reported under the Treasure Act 1996. Although it imitates late Roman rings in its general appearance, it does not do so in any other respect, and there is no evidence from the w…

One edge is straight while the other is curved. The pin bar features central rectangular mouldings that retain the wire pin. The straight edge has a sheet roller which the pin rests against. The other outer edge is externally bevelled and moulded internally; this is echoed on the lower surface. A similar buckle can be found illustrated in Margeson (1993, 33; ref. 218).
