Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete post-medieval lead-alloy cloth seal of early 18th-century date. A disc survives, slightly damaged, from what was probably a four-disc seal from the series featuring a monarch's head. As Egan (1994, 60) states, the relief designs on these alnage seals are characterised by fine detail resulting from well-engraved dies. The disc bears a female bust facing left, that of Queen Anne (AD 1702-1714). The bust is surrounded by a border of short raised transverse lines and the legend MAG BRIR ET HIB. There is evidence for a loop at one point at right angles to the bust. The clot…

A complete cast lead-alloy medieval pilgrim's ampulla. The ampulla is decorated bifacially on the lower chamber. On one side is a quatrefoil flower, the other a crowned heart with fine cross-hatching within a linear border. It is thought perhaps to relate to Bromholm Priory, Norfolk.

A large, slightly bent crude cast lead pot-mend, with off-centre perforation (9mm by 4.8mm). No sherds have been retained within the slot making dating difficult. The lower surface is very rough; the upper surface has contraction marks probably a result of cooling, as well as a separation of a central from the rim probably for the same reason.
