Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete post-medieval lead-alloy cloth seal of early 18th-century date. A disc survives, slightly damaged, from what was probably a four-disc seal from the series featuring a monarch's head. As Egan (1994, 60) states, the relief designs on these alnage seals are characterised by fine detail resulting from well-engraved dies. The disc bears a female bust facing left, that of Queen Anne (AD 1702-1714). The bust is surrounded by a border of short raised transverse lines and the legend MAG BRIR ET HIB. There is evidence for a loop at one point at right angles to the bust. The clot…

A cast lead pot mend to repair a base, used to mend a Roman Central Gaulish black-slipped ware vessel dating to the late 2nd-century in order to lengthen the period of use after damage had occurred. Three fragments of a Central Gaulish black-slipped ware rim or base are visible (the largest fragment is 28.7mm in length and 9.25mm high). The fragments could be from a rim of a base, the latter is more likely are the repair would have rendered the vessel unusable if the visible …

On one side is a quatrefoil flower, the other a crowned heart with fine cross-hatching within a linear border. This motif, or similar, has been found on ampullae found in Salisbury (Spencer 1990, 91; ref. 186), London, Maltby Springs, Lincs., and Brandon in Suffolk (ibid., 60; ref. 132), and in many other locations besides (the Salisbury example has been referenced a number of times on this database). It is thought perhaps to relate to Bromholm Priory, Norfolk.
