Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn, corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of late medieval to early post-medieval date. The plain frame is formed of a pair of 'Ds' that incurve towards the pin bar; the pin is missing. On the upper surface the frame appears to be bevelled round the outer edge and also internally on the loops. The lower face is flat, giving the frame a sub-triangular cross-section (with rounded corners). Buckles of this size with double oval frames have been found in late medieval contexts (cf. Egan and Pritchard 1991, 82-83; refs. 332-333), but as the form persists a…

A cast copper-alloy single-looped medieval buckle frame. The frame is oval, with an expanded, rounded outer edge (Th.: 3.55mm). There is a notch at the centre of the outer edge which would have acted as a pin rest; it is flanked by three engraved lines on either side. Around a third of the pin survives, looped around the offset pin bar. The surface of the buckle is worn while the reverse of the buckle is seemingly flat.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The remains of a copper-alloy medieval annular brooch, with just under half of the original artefact surviving. One of the broken ends features a constriction presumably for the pin. The brooch would have been circular, with six projecting circular collets; three are present on this fragment, evenly spaced. One collet still contains a green gemstone (or glass), with another gem removed recently; there is a lack of corrosion product over the white fixative. Any decorative detail has been lost due to corrosion.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy medieval 'locking buckle' frame. The frame is rectangular in plan, with rounded corners and the artefact has been bent, particularly on the long edges. The outer edge is thick (c. 5.51mm), flat and rabbeted (or notched) to accept and secure a U-shaped arm attached to the pin bar: the bar and the arm are both now missing. It also features an incised central logitudinal pin rest. In profile the sides are expanded to receive the off-centred pin bar. These buckles are well attested in the literature; recent published examples can be found illustrated in Egan…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A medieval cast copper-alloy seal matrix of 14th-century date. It has a circular die, from which emerges a faceted handle of hexagonal cross-section. The handle terminates with a pointed oval shaped suspension loop perforated with a roughly circular hole; there seem to be file marks on the sides. The loop is slightly narrowed above the handle. The die bears the image of a stag with a cross between its antlers. This is the symbol of both St Hubert of Lieges and St Eustace. The face is very similar to examples from Sussex (SUSS-D18397), Suffolk (SF-DBED51) and another from Ox…

Object type: HORSESHOE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded and incomplete wrought iron horseshoe of probable later medieval date, possibly post-medieval. It has a rounded outer edge and an inner profile resembling a pointed arch. There are at least two nail holes on either side; it is likely the artefact has six nail holes, arranged three-three. Both terminals have been lost; it is not clear whether any calkins were present. One terminal is thickened (web width: 33.3mm) compared to the other (13.9mm). This 'later medieval' form can be compared with those illustrated in Clark (1986, 3; fig. 8).
