A bent post-medieval copper-alloy Nuremberg rose/orb jetton, dating to the period AD 1500-1600. The obverse is also mostly indiscernible, though the faint outline of the three crowns, alternately with three lis, arranged centrifugally around a central rose can be seen. On the reverse, there is an imperial orb surmounted by a cross patty, within a tressure with three main arches. Both legends are illegible.

Obverse: Dolphin embowed left, purse in mouth + LE:NOBLE:ET:FIER double crosslet stops and annuletted T Reverse: Triple-stranded cross flory, quatrefoil in centre, all within quatrefoil with coarse florets on cusps and A V E G between crosslets in spandrels Reference: Very close to SMMC 3, no. 91; for comparable pieces see Mitchiner 1988: 182-184.

The 'Venus pennies' were a popular series of jettons, or reckoning counters, that were made for the merchants of Antwerp during a period when this city was the flourishing principal commerical centre of the land, and were circulated amongst the merchant classes during the first half of the sixteenth century. A French copper alloy jetton of the Rose shield of Tournai type with semi-Roman lettering. The obverse is a shield of Tournai bearing two towers of Tournai in chief and possibly fleur de lis in base, all in a seven arched tressure and bordered by a circle and legend. The reverse is a simple cross patty with floral ornament in each angle, also bordered by a circle and legend. This jetton type date to circa 1497 to 1521. Cf Mitchiner (1988) No. 720.
