A Late Medieval (1400-1500) sheet copper-alloy end-cap from a scale or whittle-tang knife. It measures 30.39x14.24x1.40mm and weighs 3.02g. In profile the object is arched into a U-shape. The object is sub-oval in shape with a protrusion at one narrow end, and a probable worn break at the other (and missing its protrusion). Both front and back surfaces carry a light coloured concretion, obscuring any detail. At the centre is a rectangular slot (c.4x3mm), now filled with iron corrosion. A cast copper-alloy ring of a type often been suggested to be medieval or post-medieval harness rings (Geake 2001, 74), though they are typically undiagnostic. Further, Geake (ibid., 74) suggests that the broadly hexagonal cross-section which this ring possesses probably indicates a medieval date; it is bevelled externally and internally at the edge. This ring has a maximum internal diameter of c. 20.2mm
