Later Upper Palaeolithic flake (15,000-8,300 BC). The flake surface shows evidence cortex reforming giving an indication of the age of the flake, it is also patinated from light grey to white reflecting the deposition chalk downland. On the dorsal surface (upper face) there are signs of platform preparation and the right edge shows signs of retouch at the distal end to form a projecting point. The bulb of percussion can be seen on the ventral surface (lower face) and the distal end (tip) terminates with a hinge fracture. Weight: 8.68g, Length: 52.89mm, Width: 29.91mm, Thickness: 6.60mm…

A collection of Late Upper Paeleolithic material from several sites on adjoining areas of the Seven Sisters.
The material was examined firstly by Jill Cook of the British Museum who suggested a Late Upper Paleolithic date and secondly by Matt Pope of ASE who agreed the dating was possible.
The collection consists of 16 flakes, some with re-touch or use wear which were found erroding out of the edges of paths and bare patches of earth on the Seven Sisters. Due to foot and other traffic the flints are vulnrable to modern damage and snapping and are also at risk from cliff erosion. The …

Four Mesolithic utilised waste flakes (8300-3500 BC). Numbers refer to photograph. All the flakes are from a mid brown flint with pale beige mottling. Flakes 1 and four are almost completely covered in mottling. Flake 1. A secondary, core refreshment, flake with retouch. There is a small amount of cortext remaining at the distal end (tip). It was hit off a prepared platform which had become faceted. There are signs of wear and retouch along the right edge of the dorsal (upper) face. Towards the distal end, short, semi-abrupt parallel retouch has been used to create a concave curve lea…

Mesolithic utilised waste flake (8300-3500 BC). On the dorsal surface (upper face) some natural cortex survives at the proximal end (butt) and there is a later break at the distal end (point). On the ventral surface (lower face) the striking platform is very small and along the right edge there are possible signs of retouch. Weight: 2.88g, Length: 38.10mm, Width: 16.64mm, Thickness: 5.28mm.

Mesolithic utilised waste flake (8300-3500 BC). On the ventral surface (lower face) the ripples are evident though the bulb of percussion is missing. Some natural cortex survives at proximal end (butt) of the dorsal surface (upper face). There is retouch along the right edge of the dorsal surface as well as some retouch on the left edge at the distal end (point), this corresponds to retouch along the right edge of ventral surface. The direction of the retouch suggests it may have been utilised as a borer. Weight: 35.23g, Length: 56.60mm, Width: 31.85mm, Thickness: 22.34mm.

Mesolithic Waste flake (8300-3500 BC). On the ventral surface the striking platform and bulb of percussion are evident, there is also a fracture along the right mesial which could be due to frost shattering. On the dorsal surface there are signs of platform preparation and some evidence of retouch on both the right mesial and along the left edge of the distal end, possibly suggesting tool maker was intending to produce an end scraper.

Mesolithic core (8300-3500 BC).
At the proximal end the core shows signs of preparation and some of the natural cortex still survives on the surface of the flint. A flake has been removed form another of the flints surfaces leaving a deep rounded scar or hinge termination, this is due to the wrong angle of blow and lack of further platform preparation. The flint is a brownish-white and has small chert inclusions.

Neolithic thumb scraper (3500 - 2100 BC).
On the ventral surface the bulb of percussion and the striking platform are not visible due to retouch, possibly indicating the multiple use of the tool. However the waves of percussion are evident and there is some possible retouch along the right mesial. The dorsal surface has been heavily retouched at the butt of the tool, which implies it was mainly used as a scraper. There is further retouch and wear on both edges of the dorsal surface giving further indication that the tool had multiple uses. Some of the natural cortex survives on the do…

Mesolithic core (8300-3500 BC). Flakes have been removed from approximately 80% of the core and the core has been worked from the striking platform which shows signs of preparation and rejuvenation.
The flint is a blackish-brown colour and the raw material is of high quality as indicated by the clear glassy surface. Some of the natural cortex still survives on the surface of the flint.

Mesolithic rejuvenation core flake (8300-3500 BC). The dorsal surface has multiple arrises and scars due to the removal of flakes. At the distal end some of the natural cortex survives. On the ventral surface the waves or ripples radiate from the proximal end however the bulb of percussion is not evident possibly due to the removal of redundant striking platforms. The rejuvenated striking platform shows multiple signs of preparation and at the distal end there are bulbous scars, suggesting an attempt was made to remove flakes from more than one platform on the core.

Number 2 on the attached photographs.
Waste bladelet flake, weighing 1.5g. Early Mesolithic to Late Mesolithic (circa 8300 - 3500 BC). Both terminals of the flake have been broken.
Ripples which have come down from the bulb of percussion can be seen on the ventral surface. The bulb of percussion and the striking platform no longer survive due to the break.
