Six waste flakes and one snapped blade with possible use chipping in places from informal tool use. Four tertiary pieces including the blade and three secondary flakes with c. 5 to 10% cortex remaining. All show evidence of careful knapping with long parallel arrises on many. Dark to light grey mottled flint, some with orange iron staining; the snapped blade is in high quality translucent dark grey flint. Total weight 45.2 grams.

Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex

Later Upper Palaeolithic flake (15,000-8,300 BC). The flake surface shows evidence cortex reforming giving an indication of the age of the flake, it is also patinated from light grey to white reflecting the deposition chalk downland. On the dorsal surface (upper face) there are signs of platform preparation as well as arrises from previous removals and at the distal end (tip) the flake has been broken at a later date. On the ventral surface (lower face) the bulb of percussion and bulb scars can be seen. There are signs of retouch along the right edge and possible use wear or blunting…

On the dorsal surface (upper face) there are signs of platform preparation and previous flake removals and the distal end (tip) of the flake has been removed. There is some natural cortex at the proximal end (butt) of the dorsal surface and along the right edge. The bulb of percussion can be seen on the ventral surface (lower face). There is some use wea…
