This record was edited and the date of the object reassessed following reappraisal by Prof. Julian Richards. A similar weight, although cylinder shaped rather than conical, was found during excavations of the 9th-century Viking settlement at Woodstown, Co. Waterford, Ireland (see: Russell and Hu…

Parts of an Anglo-Saxon sheet metal bowl made of copper alloy known as an eared cauldron, a Gotland cauldron or a Gotlandkessel. The bowl itself is intact from the rim until about half way down. The rim diameter is 196mm and the bowl is c.160mm deep. The handle is in two pieces and is made from iron. It measures 195mm in length, and most of it survives. Most of the base is missing and the edges are very uneven where it has broken. There are c.10 other fragments of the base. It has a globular body (shown by the small part of the base still present) with an everted rim. There is a singl…

Cast copper alloy Early Medieval key, dating from the pre-conquest period up to c.1200.
It is incomplete, the bow being broken. It would have been oval in shape but more than half is missing. It meets the stem in a point with a broken internal element suggesting the bow may have been openwork. The stem is very short, it has a sub-circular cross-section and is hollow; it is broken slightly at the end.
The bit is a rectangle, protruding at 90 degrees from the stem. It is openwork with a central rectangular perforation into which project two teeth/prongs above and two below, facing…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Cheshire East
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy book clasp (or possibly strap end) from the Medieval period. It has been cast in one and is not complete. Both ends have broken. The bottom (round) end has a small extension which would have had an hook on the end. The top end would have just continued on to a straight end. The book clasp would have fitted onto the edge of the cover of a book. For this the clasp is forked from half way down. The bottom end (which is solid) has a circular perforation around which, on one face, is a flower, using the hole as the central part of the flower.

Cast copper alloy late early-medieval strap end dating from c. the 11th century.
It appears to have been cast in one piece. The arms are rectangular in plan and at the top there is a circular rivet running through both which would have attached the strap end to the strap. At the base of the arms is a raised square. At the base of the strap end is a decorative terminal in the form of a floriated cross in saltire. This is decorated with grooved lines marking out the cross. The reverse of the strap end is flat and undecorated.

Cast copper alloy Early medieval stirrup strap mount. Williams Class B, Type 3, Group 9, dating to the 11th century.
The mount is sub-triangular in plan, with a circular extension at the apex. This would originally have had a circular hole in the centre through which a rivet would have gone to secure the mount. The remains of the rivet appear to have corroded onto this and so the loop appears solid. It has raised decoration on the front and is plain on the reverse. It has one central motif which consists of a forwards facing animal head, possibly a deer. This is set on a raised bos…

Early Medieval, Viking, lead weight.
It is circular in plan and flat with a copper alloy plate set on the top face. The copper alloy setting looks like a gilt bronze Irish disc, possibly a stud with the lug removed. In the centre of this is a small circular red stone or perhaps glass. This glass forms the centre of the decoration with three swirls, almost peltate in design coming from the centre. There is then a raised outer rim. In the spaces between are small grooved lines.

Cast copper alloy Early Medieval zoomorphic buckle.
It is D-shaped with a narrowed strap bar and where the loop meets the strap bar there are animal heads. Their mouths are open and the strap bar comes from here. They have ears picked out but it is difficult to pin down preciseley what animal they are. The buckle appears to have some casting flaws with irregular hollows on one side of the loop and on one head.
