A cast copper-alloy trumpet brooch of the early Roman period, c. 75-200. The brooch is incomplete and has been broken before the foot. The hinge, catchplate and pin are all missing. The head is oval in shape and attached to the main body of the object. There is some evidence of moulded decoration close to the termination of the object, where the foot would have been. The metal is dark green and brown. It measures 23mm in length and 15.29mm in height. The object is 9.27mm thick and weighs 3.1g.

Broad period: IRON AGE

Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Cast copper alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. This fitting has a flat trefoil 'button', formed from three adjoining circles. The loop (cast in one piece with the 'button') projects backwards from the rear of the head, the shank starting from the centre of the trefoil. The shank emerges at 90° to the 'button', bending as it nears the loop, which is at an angle of around 30° to the 'button', in the same plane. The loop and shank are plain, but the front of the 'button' is decorated. Each of the circles which forms the …

Terret ring fragment Fragment of a very robust copper alloy terret ring. It is broken at both ends, leaving only a small section of the full ring. The ring is circular in cross section, and is decorated with a double lip moulding. There is a drilled circular hollow on the interior face of each lip, which may originally have been filled with enamel. There is a raised moulded line around the ring where it meets the lips on either side. Parallels: The form of the lips is paralleled in many terrets from the related 1843 hoard. In size the piece is closest to M 65-69, which al…

Terret ring fragment Fragment of a copper alloy terret ring. It is broken at both ends, leaving less than a quarter of the full ring. The ring is circular in cross section, and is decorated near one end with a double lip moulding. There is iron corrosion all along the fragment, which obscures some of the surface detail, but it is possible that this piece has been mis-cast. Parallels: The form of the lips is very similar to many of the terrets in the related 1843 hoard, being most similar to M.54, Spratling's (2011) style group III. Measurements: Length: 53.2mm; diameter of ring: 7.2m…

Harness fitting fragment (?bridle bit) Small fragment of a cast copper alloy harness fitting with lipped decoration. When complete, it appears that this would have consisted of an outer ring, enclosing a smaller decorative ring. The rings are flat on the reverse, giving a D-shaped cross-section. Both rings are now broken, the remaining fragment consisting of a pair of moulded lips, which lie across the joining section of the two rings. The lips are drilled on the inside, possibly to hold enamel. There is quite a lot of surface corrosion, and on the reverse of the object are the remai…

Harness fitting fragment (?bridle bit) Small fragment of a cast copper alloy harness fitting with lipped decoration. Flat on the reverse, giving a D-shaped cross-section. It is broken at both ends, the remaining fragment consisting of a quarter circle arc decorated near one end with a single pair of moulded lips on the curved upper side of the ring. The lips are drilled on the inside, possibly to hold enamel. A broken projection into the centre of the ring suggests that originally this ring may have enclosed a smaller decorative ring. Parallels: This is unlikely to have formed part …

Chain mail armour fastener A small fragment of a copper alloy fitting, possibly a chain mail armour hook, consisting of a circular or oval terminal, tapering into a narrow neck, and fanning out towards the broken end. The object is flat in cross-section, but is bent up at 90° towards the broken fan-shaped end. In the centre of the terminal, there is a small rivet (circular in cross-section). Both sides of the object, and the rivet itself, show evidence of iron corrosion. Parallels: This object is very similar to find no. 2, although slightly smaller. It may have formed part of a cha…

In the centre of the terminal, there is a small rivet (circular in cross-section). Both sides of the object, and the rivet itself, show evidence of iron corrosion. Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Fragment of a cast copper-alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. This object comprises only the loop section, which is sub-circular in plan, tapering towards where it would have met the 'button'. Parallels: This fragment resembles the loops from many other fittings from both the related 1843 hoard and the 2011 assemblage. It is not possible to identify the form of the original object from this fragment, but it is highly likely that it formed part of a button and loop fastener (cf Wild 1970) or strap terminal (cf MacGregor 1962). …

Circular iron domed stud, with remains of broad circular-sectioned shank/pin on the reverse, now broken. It is possible that this object might have originally had a copper alloy exterior, but there is no trace of this now. Parallels: It is impossible to be certain of the date or function of this object. Broad period: IRON AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy circular ring. The ring is circular in cross-section, although wider on one side than on the other, perhaps due to wear. This object is perhaps too small to have been used as a harness fitting, and it is impossible to be sure of its function. Parallels: Rings like this could be put to many uses, and are found on sites of all periods, so it is impossible to be certain of an Iron Age date for this find. There are no direct parallels from the related 1843 hoard. Measurements: Thickness: 3.2mm; diameter: 15.9mm; weight: 1.6g
