The design consists of a central line flanked by two half circles and with a triangle at the bottom. One face of the brooch is decorated with four almost semi-circular petal-like panels where gilding survives well inside a shallow rim. These alternate with panels filled with four circumferential lines of punched annulets. On the other face is an engraved inscription which starts to the right of the pin and proceeds clockwise. It reads A + G + L + A + (a common magical inscription). The G is of…

The head is decorated with three white dots (possibly enamel) in a vertical direction at the end of either arm. This dotted decoration continues down the centre of the bow towards the foot. Cast copper alloy Roman penannular brooch, a Fowler Type A3, dating to c.100- 350 AD. The brooch itself is complete, although the pin is broken. The brooch has been squashed out of shape, probably whilst in the ground. It has golbular terminals, each with a single moulded collar. One of the terminals appears to have an extra bit of metal, it could be a mis-cast which was not cleaned up. The pin was formed by a strip of wire folded over the brooch, the loop remains but it has broken before it extends to the pin. Mackreth (2011) Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain : vo…

A cast copper alloy Roman knee brooch dating to the period AD 150 to 220. The brooch is missing the sping, pin and most of the catchplate. It has a cylindrical wing casing which would have held the spring in place. There is a rib below the head. The bow is widest at the knee, narrowing towards the simple rounded foot. The catchplate is broken. This brooch does not fit particularly well into Butcher and Bayley's knee brooch typology. However, it is perhaps most similar to Type 176a, with its cylindrical wing casing.

Copper alloy head of a Roman trumpet brooch, dating to c. 75- 175 AD. It is a large, and slightly unusual variety and unfortunately is quite corroded. It is a sprung type, with huge coils, four complete and two which are broken. The wire then threads through the coils. The central broken coil would have extended to the pin but that is now gone. The wire also runs below the spring, connected to both ends. The head almost immediately narrows away from the spring, which extends above the head. It is sub-traingular in plan, the broken end showing the bow would have had a circular cros…

Cast copper alloy Medieval annular brooch, c.12-1400 AD. The frame appears complete although some of the edges are uneven. The pin has fused to the frame with corrosion and has broken so it is incomplete. The frame is decorated on the front but not on the reverse. The front appears to have been gilded, some of this remains. The pattern is unclear due to corrosion but it could be a floral/vegetal repeating motif.
