Cast copper alloy cosmetic pestle dating from the 1st century BC to the early 2nd century AD. It is the pestle from a set and would have fit into a mortar. It has anintegrally cast loop at one end and curves gently to form a shallow crescent. It narrows to a point at the terminal. It is thickest in the central part. There are some small scratch marks near to the loop which may be intentional but it is not clear. It has a smooth, even brown patina all over.

Copper-alloy end-looped pestle from a Late Iron Age to Roman cosmetic set. The pestle is curved and the loop has a small 'eye' and a slender bill-like extension which gives the appearance of a duck or swan's head. The other terminal tapers to a point. Similar examples can be seen in Jackson's article (1985, 180-182, nos. 40 and 41). Cosmetic sets are very hard to date precisely as few have been found in secure contexts but most fall between the first and second centuries AD.
