Object type: WHETSTONE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Stockton-on-Tees
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Possible whetstone of unknown date. It is sub-oval in plan with rounded edges. It is a rounded oval in cross-section also with all edges rounded. It is made from a brown-grey stone. There are linear grooves on all the surfaces, possibly caused by sharpening tools. It is difficult to say that this is definitely a whetstone as natural stones could be used for this purpose without much working to make them suitable, this appears to be in that group.

Object type: AXE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Knapped, ground and polished axe head of probable later Neolithic date (2900-2100 BC). This axe is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-oval (humped) in cross section. In plan the sides of the axe taper from the widest point at the cutting edge to a relatively narrow rounded butt. Width at widest- 55.04mm, at narrowest- 21.30mm. It is mostly complete with just a few chips missing from the edges. It has a white/cream patina and where the surface has chipped away a dark grey stone can be seen. This difference in the colours may be to do with patination from the time spent…

Large stone cannon ball, Post Medieval in date. It is spherical and appears to have been burnt on one side. It appears to be made from a sandstone (but I am not a geologist) and is sandy coloured on one side and black on the other (presumably from burning). Natasha Ferguson who is studying for a PhD in Battlefield Archaeology saw an image of this object and comments 'They could be as early as 15th century, but yet if lead or iron supplies were low during the English Civil War in the 17th century they would use stone occasionally. I would put it as no later than m…

Group 6 Borrowdale Tuff rock type, green in colour. It has some working at one end which may suggest it has been used as an ad hoc tool at some point in prehistory. It is very weather worn. Most of the breaks on the stone are not human made but the end which has been photographed appears to have had a few flakes taken off purposefully. All the other edges are worn/smooth and this is due to weathering It is an irregular shape meaasuring 45.31 x 31.27 x 19.04mm

Male head from red sandstone. It appears to be a man with his eyes closed. He is wearing some kind of cap. Behind the head, the fragment is flat, where it would have been fixed to a wall. It is c.170mm in height and c.100mm wide. It would have been the stop or finial at the end of a hood moulding over a window or arch or something similar. It appears to be slightly asymetrical which would support such a position. It would have been matched by another one at the other side of the arch. Probably 14th century in date.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A carved stone head, in a light grey coloured stone, possibly limestone. It is carved only on one face with a near-triangular face, triangular nose, heavy almond-shaped eyes and rather gash-like mouth. The other faces are rough and not carved into, it appears that this stone was made to go into a wall. This head was found under the floorboards of a house with two 19th century medicine jars (LVPL-5587A5) and so it is likely that it dates to around that time. However it is very hard to date these type of finds precisely. This style of carving could be attributed to the 'Celtic h…
