Circumstances of discovery: Whilst searching with a metal detector Description: Silver hollow cast sphere from a huntsman's whistle. The pea is now missing. Decoration is applied on both sides in the form of a quatrefoil motif with a plain cross running through the centre. Discussion: This fragment was found within very close proximity to the Silver Huntman's whistle found in October 2002 (see 2005 T22; TAR 2995 - 2006), and as such is most likely to be part of the same artefact. Due to its age and precious metal content, this item would qualify as treasure under the Trea…

The item is cylindrical in shape; it is open at one end and has a closed, rounded end at the opposite end. The whole of the item is now flattened in appearance due to damage. The wire, which is circular in section, measures c.0.5mm; ten of these wires are combined to form a larger 'thread' measuring c.5mm. A cast copper alloy weight dating from the post medieval or modern period. It weighs 12.34 grams or 0.43 ounces, suggesting that this was probably a half ounce weight. It has a lip running around the outside edge of one face; at the centre of this face is a pair of concentric circles. Above these circles are the crowned initials either 'G R' or 'C R', which would stand for 'Georgius Rex' or 'Carolus Rex' (i.e 'King George' or 'King Charles', although there is no indication which King George or Charles this might be). Although the initials are worn, it is more likely that they read 'G …
