Weights of this kind have been in use for many centuries; therefore it is difficult to attribute a more precise date if they have not been recovered from an archaeological context.

A lead alloy two-part cloth seal, probably dating to c. 1650-1724. Both discs and the connecting strip survive. The discs are flat and circular in form, and both surfaces are very worn. The front face of the disc depicts a laureate bust right; traces of an inscription, now illegible. The reverse of the seal depicts a double rose, above which is the inscription: 838(star). The front is domed or convex; the surface is very worn and there are traces of vertical and horizontal lines forming a criss-cross pattern. Some crude lead tokens of late 17th century date are illustrated in Egan (2005: p170; fig 165). However, as the Devon item did not come from a dateable archaeological context, it can only be given a broad Medieval to Post Medieval date.
