The object is a probable sewing ring, Medieval - Post Medieval in date or 15th - 17th century. As an example Holmes illustrates two sewing rings, fig. 4 and 5: c (Holmes, E. F. 1991. Sewing Thimbles. Finds research group 700-1700: Datasheet 9). The object is made out of a sub-circular cylinder of copper alloy, 21.1mm in diameter at the sub-circular rim and 17.8mm in diameter at the open sub-circular upper edge. The rim of the object is quite thick and undecorated. The upper edge however is much thinner, not rounded and looks as though it has possibly been cut. It is possible that th…

The object is a complete sewing ring, Medieval - Post Medieval in date or 15th - 17th century. As an example Holmes illustrates two sewing rings, fig. 4 and 5:c (Holmes, E. F. 1991. Sewing Thimbles. Finds research group 700-1700: Datasheet 9). The sewing ring is made out of a cylinder of copper alloy, 22.7mm in diameter at the base and 16.2mm in diameter at the open sub-circular upper edge. The rim of the object is undecorated. The indentations on the sewing ring are larger than earlier examples (approximately 2.5mm in diameter), more neatly executed (Geake, H. 2001 Finds Recording …

The object is a complete domed copper alloy thimble, Medieval - Post Medieval in date or 15th – 16th century. Holmes illustrates a similar example fig. 2:b (Holmes, E. F. 1991. Sewing Thimbles. Finds research group 700-1700: Datasheet 9) which he describes as being a heavy duty thimble which would probably have been used in conjunction with a heavier needle possibly for working coarse cloth or leather (p.1-3). The illustrated example is similar to, but smaller than the recorded object. In profile the thimble has straight sides which taper inwards slightly to a dom…

The object is an incomplete domed copper alloy thimble of Medieval date or 14th – 15th century. A similar example, to the recorded object can be seen in Holmes (Holmes, E. F. 1976. Thimbles. Macmillan: Dublin) which depicts a brass thimble from Winchester (see fig.15, b) there are however slight differences between the two which will be described below. In profile the thimble has straight sides which taper inwards slightly to a domed top. In plan the rim of the object is sub-circular. Parts of the rim and sides are missing (not recent breaks) and show signs of a…

The object is an incomplete copper alloy thimble of Medieval date or 14th – 15th century. As an example, Ottaway and Rogers (Ottaway P. and Rogers N. 2002.Craft, Industry and Everday Life: Finds from Medieval York. CBA: p.2740) illustrates a copper alloy thimble from York (see fig.14185) which is almost exact in shape and decoration to the recorded object. In profile the thimble has straight sides which taper inwards slightly to a pointed apex. In plan the rim of the object is sub-circular. Parts of the rim are missing (not recent breaks) and show signs of a…
