Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The object is a probable fragment of a forked spacer from a composite buckle of medieval date, or 13th century to 15th century. The object is cast copper alloy. The object represents the portion of a buckle (not recent breaks) where the frame and forked spacer meet, see for example fig. 47 (Egan, G and Pritchard, F. 1991 Medieval Finds From Excavations in London: 3. Dress Accessories c.1150 - c.1450, HMSO, London), unlike the illustrated example however, the recorded object is missing the pin as well as most of the buckle frame and the spacers. Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probable spindle whorl made of cast lead alloy. The dating of lead spindle whorls is difficult due to the long period of time over which they were used, according to Geake (Geake, H. 2001 Finds Recording Guide, Version 1.1; August 2001) lead spindle whorls have been found in both Roman and Medieval contexts (Geake 2001, 66). This object could therefore date to any time between the 1st century AD and the 16th century AD. In plan the object is sub-circular while in section the object is biconical. The object has a central perforation which is roughly sub-circular in plan.…

The object is a probable mount of Medieval to Post Medieval date, or the mid 14th to 18th century. The object is cast copper alloy. The object is a probable stud/nail/mount which Margeson (Margeson, S. 1993 Norwich Households: Medieval and Post Medieval Finds from Norwich Survey, Excavations 1971-78. East Anglian Archaeology 58) attributes to the post-medieval or 16th century to 17th century. As an example Margeson, fig. 528 illustrates a copper alloy stud, which she suggests was probably used for furniture, but may also have been used for horse-harnesses. The stud illustrated in Margeson however, is more complete and slightly larger than the recorded object. The object is cast copper alloy. In plan…

The object is a strap fitting which Geake (Geake, H. 2001 Finds Recording Guide, Version 1.1; August 2001) attributes to the early post-medieval, or early 15th to 17th century. As an example Egan, fig. 146, illustrates a suspended copper alloy vessel with an escutcheon attached to the rim (Egan, G. 1998 The Medieval Household Daily Living c. 1150-c.1450 Museum of London).
