The object is an incomplete brooch of Langton Down type. It is thought to date to the late Iron Age to early Roman period or 1st Century AD. The brooch is made from cast copper alloy. As an example Hattatt (Hattatt, R 1987. Brooches of Antiquity. Oxbow: Oxford; fig.16, no. 770) illustrates a Langton Down type brooch from France which is similar to, but more complete than the recorded example.
