The object is a copper alloy buckle plate, probably dating to the medieval period, (mid-twelfth to sixteenth centuries); although an early medieval date cannot be ruled out. The buckle plate is complete. In plan the object is small, sub-rectangular and narrow. The buckle plate was hammered from a single piece of copper alloy sheet; which was then folded in half to create a recess for a frame. Looking at the front of the object one can see that originally the plate was secured to a strap by a single iron rivet, which is sub-circular in plan and approximately 2.9mm in diameter. …

The object is a hooked tag of Early Medieval type, thought to date to the seventh to twelfth centuries AD. The object is made of cast copper alloy and is incomplete. The object consists of an inverted sub-triangular plate and a small integral backward facing hook. The plate is incomplete due to an obliquely angled break in the right hand corner. This corner piece is now missing. Slight damage is also visible elsewhere around the edge of the plate. The width of the plate is 13.1mm, and the length is 20.4mm. The object is a possible fragment of an early Medieval Thomas Class A type 2 strap fitting (Thomas, G. 2003. Late Anglo-Saxon and Viking strap-ends 750-1100: Part 1. Finds Research Group AD700-1700. Datasheet 32, p.2). Although the use of geometric patterns to decorate strap ends continues into the late Medieval, (see for example Fig 96, no.763 in Egan, G and Pritchard, F. 1991 Medieval Finds From Excavations in London: 3.
