Object type: SPOON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The broken bowl from a cast copper-alloy 17th-century post-medieval spoon. The handle and the majority of the bowl are missing, both from old breaks. The handle is rectangular in cross-section; on the lower surface it tapers to a point at its junction with the bowl. The surviving section of the bowl is shallow and has been bent upwards at the extant terminal, with breaks to each side. There is evidence on the bowl for a circular makers mark, central on the upper surface, which is now unclear but possibly a (Tudor) rose (as with SOM-7C2A26 on this database). The lower surface is plain.…

Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete lead button of post-medieval with the corroded remains of an iron loop on the lower surface in the form of two stubs. The object is plano-convex and sub-circular in plan. Its upper surface bears moulded lines that radiate out fairly crudely from a central point. There is a further possible moulding between two of the lines. The object has corroded to a grey/white colour. Similar examples can be found illustrated in Read (2005, 82; refs. 343, 344).

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy fragment probably from a medieval or post-medieval cooking vessel. The fragment has a trapezoidal cross-section and narrows gradually from its end (W.: 28.1mm) to the point where it has broken (W.: 25.1mm). One face has bevelled sides, including the terminal. The artefact decreases in thickness as it travels towards the break, through a curve (Th.: 15.1mm, to 7.75mm); the second measurement represents a consistent thickness attained after the curve. The object is very similar to one recorded on this database, SOM-769421, and the identification is based upon this oth…

A worn and corroded cast copper-alloy object, probably a Bronze Age gouge. The artefact is sub-rectangular in shape and U-shaped in cross-section.
