A heavily corroded copper-alloy Roman as or dupondius of Antonine date, possibly Macus Aurelius (AD 161-180) as Caesar, dating to the period c.AD 139-161 (Reece period 7). Reverse type possibly depicting Mars walking right holding spear and trophy. Mint of Rome. cf. RIC III, p. 184, no. 1322. If this is indeed Marcus as Caesar with the Mars reverse type then it is possibly a Coin of British Association as listed by D. Walker in his report on the Sacred Springs at Bath (Walker, 1988: pp. 295, 299, nos. 382-435, pl. XXXVIII).

Object type: STRAP FITTING

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy sword belt fitting of post-medieval date. The surviving portion comprises the lower part of an openwork mount, which has a backwards curving hook at the lower end. This contains a ring. The lower hole appears to contain a small lump of iron corrosion and this was therefore presumably a rivet hole. When complete, the fitting was probably similar to no. 357 in Brian Read's 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (2002, p. 42).
