Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Neolithic (circa 4000BC to 2500BC) polished stone axe head. The axe head measures 10.2cm in length, 2.8cm in thickness and 5.6cm in width at the blade end which tapers down to 2.5cm at the opposite end. The stone is a basic igneous rock which has been subjected to low grade metamorphism. Such rocks are common in Devon and Cornwall around the edges of the granite intrusions that form Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor and Lands End.

Neolithic (3500-2100BC) polished axe head, knapped from a cream coloured stone. The surface of the axe is not fully polished, leaving a large amount of scaring along the edges of the axe from the shaping process. The butt end is damaged and incomplete, and the break appears worn. The cutting edge is in good condition, with the exception of a few small chips, and the blade itself is not worn. The axe has a double convex cross section. In profile, the axe is widest towards the cutting edge with convex sides tapering towards the butt end and more pronounced curvature towards the cutting e…

Neolithic (4000-2500BC) stone axe, dating circa 4000-2500 BC. The axe was knapped from what appears to be Cornish greenstone, and the surface was polished to give a smooth apperance. The surface is now rough and pitted due to weathering. The axe is sub-triangular in plan and lenticular in cross section. It is narrow at the butt end, measuring 22.53mm wide, 13.68mm thick. It is thickest at the mid-section, measuring 39.38mm. The axe is widest at the cutting edge, measuring 78.38mm wide.

Incomplete Neolithic polished axe knapped from an orange-brown stone. The axe has been polished over the entire surface, however the grinding was not deep enough to remove all of the flaking scars. The butt end has been left partically flaked, and it is slightly damaged. The cutting edge has been broken, and the edge reknapped and polished to form a new cutting edge - This end of the axe has not been as well polished as the rest of the surface. The two narrow sides have been ground further to create a slightly flattened edge, giving the axe a double convex cross section, with flattened…

Large waste flake, probably of Neolithic date, knapped from non-local stone. There is evidence of platform preporation and a large bulb of percussion, but no impact ripples. There is a hinged termination on the distal end of the dorsal surface. There is a small amount of retouch along one edge. The other edge is covered in a large amount of natural cortex. There is some scaring on the dorsal surface where previous flakes have been removed, and patches of iron staining. The flake is sub-triangular in plan, and may have been utilised as a crude scraper. It has a triangular cross section.…

Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead knapped from white stone. The stone has been worked with pressure-flaked invasive removals over both surfaces to form the shape of the arrowhead, with retouched edges to form the barbs and tang. The rectangular round-ended tang is complete. The barbs are square, one being incomplete with a worn, oblique break. The arrowhead is an elongated oval shape in profile. There is a small amount of iron staining on the surface of the stone. The arrowhead is 27.79mm long, 21.83mm wide and 5.02mm thick.

Palaeolithic axe. The axe is sub-triangular in plan, with a squared off point. The butt-end is on a natural, angular fracture with over 50% natural cortex surviving on the butt-end. The edges are straight sided, however there is a slight twist on one edge towards the butt-end. There are covering removals of different sizes on both faces of the axe. The larger removals are from the original roughing out of the stone to create the overall shape of the axe. Semi-abrupt removals were then used to remove smaller flakes along the sides of the axe to thin the edges. The axe has a squashed dou…

Mesolithic flake knapped from light orange-brown stone. The dorsal surface has a central arrise, which then formed into two parallel arrises where another flake has been removed from the surface. The edges are serrated with short, semi-abrupt removals. The distal end has been worked to a point, with abrupt removals on one side, and long removals on the other. The proximal end has a partial hinge fracture, possible where the proximal end of the flake has been used to create trapezoid microliths. There is no bulb of percussion on the ventral surface, however impact ripples extend down it…
