A copper-alloy sheet representing part of a vessel rim and wall, probably early post-medieval in date. The damaged sheet is sub-triangular in plan, with one side folded over to form of a curved rim with three unevenly spaced rectangular-headed rivets remaining, each approximately 14 mm in length. There are four further rivet holes on one curved edge of the body section, the one nearest the rim with a rivet remaining, and further damaged probable rivet holes on both edges. It is possible that this is a bucket repair. The damage to the sheet makes an estimation of the diameter of the…

A rim sherd of a post-medieval glazed red earthenware dish or bowl, dated to the mid 16th to 17th centuries. The sherd has an everted rim, thickened on the outside. The exterior surface is of a dark red colour, with a brown glaze on the inner surface. The core is visible from old, worn breaks and is of a dark red colour with a dark grey core towards the inner surface. The sherd is too small to measure the original diameter of the vessel but the slightness of the curve suggests that it was large. The sherd measures 59.0 mm long, 51.3 mm wide, 16.2 mm thick (rim), 9.2 mm thick (wall…

A body sherd from a post-medieval green glazed borderware vessel, dated to the 16th century and possibly an example of Tudor green. The fabric of the vessel is visible from old worn breaks and is pale and even in colour. The sherd measures 61.9 mm long, 38.4 mm wide, 3.2 mm thick and weighs 10.0 grams.

A Post Medieval glass vessel neck fragment, probably dating to between 16th-17th centuries AD. The vessel is incomplete and is represented by the neck and irregularly-shaped rim only. The rim is irregular and damaged; it curves outward to produce a rim diameter of 23.8mm and is 6.5mm thick. The neck is short (13.5mm) . The vessel then starts to flare outwards. The rim and neck form would suggest a bottle. The glass is a dark mottled green and translucent, but not clear. The outer surface is mottled with a silver/gold speckled patina over the green glass. The vessel fragment is 23.9mm…

Six sherds from Roman fine to medium sand-tempered ware vessels, c. 2nd-4th century AD. Of the six sherds, five are body sherds and one is a small rolled rim sherd. They are of varying colouration, ranging from orange-red to buff-pink to buff to charcoal grey, with the rim sherd being buff-brown colour; all exhibit similar small to medium inclusions. Because they have been rolled and abraded from the shoreline, a more specific date or identification is difficult. The overall weight of the sherds is 26.6 grams. The rim sherd has a suggested internal diameter of 19 cm and measures …

One sherd of a Roman grog-tempered ware, c. 1st-2nd century AD. Because the sherd has been rolled and significantly worn in situ, it cannot be attributed to a specific vessel type. Both outer and inner surfaces are of an even orange-red colour with a thick dark grey core; the fabric has small to medium inclusions, with a few larger pieces of grog visible. It measures 38.8 mm long, 20.1 mm wide and 9.5 mm thick; it weighs 9.13 grams.

Five sherds of Medieval sand-tempered ware from vessels of uncertain type, c. mid 13th-14th century AD. Four are body sherds and the fifth is a small rim sherd. All of the sherds are of consistent colour and fabric, with reddish-orange colour on outer surface and a buff-brown inner surface and small to medium-sized inclusions. The rim sherd is too small to measure to suggest a circumference for the original vessel. It is uncertain whether any of the sherds are from the same vessel. The collective weight is 25.5 grams, with the largest sherd measuring 32 mm long, 31.5 mm wide and …

Four body sherds from Roman wheelmade greyware ceramic vessels, c. 2nd-4th century AD. It is unclear whether any of the sherds belong to the same vessel and there is nothing particularly specific remaining on the sherds to facilitate a more specific date or attribution to a type of vessel. The ceramic is all of a fine material, with very small inclusions evenly dispersed. There seems to be a degree of sooting which has been identified on the external surface of three of the four sherds by specialist Luke Barber. The collective weight is 27.8 grams. The largest fragment measures 51.…
