Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast iron ball, probably round shot, that is a cannon ball, dating from the Post Medieval period, about AD1500-1900. The object, which is pitted and corroded, has a diameter of c.100mm and a weight of 3919g, c. 4kg.
In recording a similar piece Kinnear states: This corresponds closely with the dimensions and weight of four inch, 'nine-pounder' (weighing 9lbs) ordnance. Shot of this size were used in the 16th and 17th centuries in a gun known as the Demi Culverin. However, the shot could also date from the later period. In the 18th century ordnance was regularised, and the Chie…

An iron axehead, probably of Early-Medieval date of 'Francisca' form dating from the 6th century AD or possibly a later Roman axe.
The butt-end of the tool is flat and sub-rectangular in shape measuring 39.7mm wide and 69.9mm tall. The area around the socket meets the butt end at a c..45 degree angled although the socket through this area is parallel to the butt end. The sides of the tool-head expand slightly with a convex curve to accommodate an oval socket. The socket, which is filled with mud and corrosion, measures circa 31.4mm x 19.4mm. The top edge of the butt-end gently cu…

Iron spearhead of probably late Medieval date. The blade is complete and a broad leaf shape with convex curved sides widening evenly form the point to the rounded base of the blade. A rounded rib runs from the socket about half way along the length of the blade on both sides; the ribs thicken towards the base but appear solid. The blade is otherwise flat and even in thickness. Due to the level of corrosion it is hard to identify the width of the sharpened edges, if any. The socket is conical and tapering, continuing the line of the ribs but only hollow until it meets the blade. The en…

Post-medieval spherical iron cannon ball. The ball measures 57.2mm in diameter and may have lost a small amount of the surface due to corrosion.
Blackmore (1976, 392ff.) suggests balls of this size were fired from a 2.5 inch (63.5mm) bore cannon, the Falcon or falconet, which fired a ball weighing approximately 2lbs (907.2g). As this type endured from the later 16th century through the following century including the Civil War, with slight fluctuations in its diameter and weight of shot, a relatively wide date range is offered, c. AD 1575-1700.

A cast iron post medieval pot leg dating to the period c AD1700 to 1850. The plain leg has a very worn rounded foot and is triangular in cross sectionwith a flat inner side and convex outer. At the top part of the vessel wall is still attached with an irregular break all around. It has a orange, rusted surface.
The pot leg measures 85.56mm in length, 43.26mm in width at the top, 16.80mm in width at the foot and weighs 153g.
Butler et al. (2009) suggest cast iron vessels replace copper alloy at around AD 1700 to 1850 in different parts of the country. Like most iron items they do…

An incomplete iron horseshoe of probable medieval date (c. 1250 - 1500). The horseshoe exhibits similarities to Clark's "Transitional" or "Later medieval" types It exhibits a broad web and a broad margin between the outer edge of the shoe and the nail holes, as well as a calkin at one terminus. There are eight reactangular nail holes visible, four on each branch.

Post Medieval iron cannon ball. It is spherical and is 38.2mm (1.5 inches) in diameter. It weighs 179g (6.25oz). The surface of the ball is corroded and flaking and probably some mass has been lost to corrosion.
A cannon ball weighing 8ozs was fired from a Robinet cannon and this may be for a similar size cannon. These type of cannons were used in the 17th century (Blackmore 1990 Arms and Armour of the English Civil Wars, Royal Armouries p. 83). the find spot may suggest a civil war association as Wellington was fired on from this area.

An iron trigger mechanism and attached hammer of a large flintlock pistol, possibly a Brown Bess lock (Noel Hulme, 1969, fig. 214, fig. 69, no. 5). The trigger mechanism is formed of two parts, the body of the trigger and a jaw screw, both of which survive. The terminal of the mechanism has two horizontal plates, the jaws, which would have held the flint. The jaws are connect together and to the hammer by a vertical bar running down one side. The screw runs vertically through the jaws adjacent to the side fixed by the vertical bar and would have tightened to hold the flint in place. T…

About two fifths of a cast iron cannon ball. The majority of the cannonball is lost to an old break. This break may have happened after deposiiton due to rusting and fracturing of the iron. the piece now weighs 1118 grams suggesting an original weight of c.2,700 grams, 6 lbs.
A cannon ball of this size and shape would have been typical for amunition for a saker cannon. The saker is a medium sized cannon developed during the early 16th century AD. The barrel of the saker was typically 2.9m long and weighed approximately 860kg. It required a creew of 6 to operate and could fire up to…

Post Medieval cast iron cannon ball. It is spherical with a distinct casting seam and rough mould vent sprue mark on one side. It is 49.3mm, 1.95 inches in diameter and weighs 440 grams, 15.5 ounces.
Historic sources in the late 16th and early 17th century suggest 'falconet' cannons shot balls of 2 inch diameter weighing between 1lb 2 ounces and 1lb 4 ounces. This ball is therefore probably for a cannon of that type and dates to the late 16th to 17th centuries. There was always some variation in cannons and the balls they used at the time and this example may also have lost so…

Forged iron horseshoe of mid-11th-early 13th Century date. The shoe is arched with a wavy outer side, protruding nails and calkins. The nail-holes are punched from the front or ground surface; three to each branch. Due to the narrowness and bulk of the metal, the nail-holes push the edge of the shoe out to produce the typical 'lobate' wavy edge. The surviving nails are of the 'fiddle-key' style (Clark (1995) fig. 64a pp. 86), with a large head which protrudes below the shoe and is semi-circular in profile. The protruding nails gave the horse more grip when on soft land, like modern fo…

A corroded wrought iron nail of probable post-medieval date. The very irregular sub-rectangular head is slightly domed. It measures 48.2mm by 38.3mm, and is 8.2mm thick. The spike is rectangular in cross-section and tapers rapidly to a point, it is 29.1mm long. The artefact weighs 72.5g. The shortness of the spike may suggest that rather than nailing two things together this was a decorative/reinforcing stud for something like a door or wheel.

Square sectioned iron nail or stud with large circular lead head. The shank is 15.4mm long and tapers evenly through its lengh to the flat point. The lead head is 33.3mm by 31.2mm by 13.5mm, thicker in the centre where it joins the shank (a small part of which shows through the outer side) and narrower at the edges. It weighs 55.75 grams. Such nails are not uncommon finds (SUSS-AED247) although their exact use is uncertain. They could be as early as Roman in date but are probably Post Medieval.

The iron lower edge and sides from a spade blade, probably of Roman date. The remainder of the blade and handle would have been made of wood, with the iron reinforcing the edge.
In form, this piece is similar to Roman spades from excavations; however, this form continued in use through the Early Medieval and Medieval periods. This example was on the surface of a mound of probable Roman saltworking debris (based on surrounding pottery and the form of the mound) and therefore is almost certainly Roman.

A large Post-Medieval iron horseshoe. The shoe is thick, slightly asymmetrical in shape and convex - the upper face slopes inwards slightly. It has a shallow groove around the outer edge of the lower face, within which rectangular nail holes are arranged at regular intervals - four on each side. Two bent, large iron nails remain in situ. Murray (1937, pp.140-1) states that these multiple nail holes could easily damage the hoof, though not all were in use at once. This particular type of shoe appears to have been in common use from the mid 17th to the end of the 18th. Because of its clu…
