A copper-alloy vessel rim fragment of late medieval to early post-medieval dating (c. AD 1400-1700).
The rim fragment is irregular, broadly sub-triangular, in plan, with a cross section which has a slightly thickened upper lip section and thins as it travels down. The rim type consists of an internally rounded lip which would arguably have sat flat. The exterior and interior surfaces are unpolished and rough. The fragment is a dark green colour, with an uneven surface patina. There are possible traces of sooting below the internal under-hang of the r…

A very worn fragment from a cast copper-alloy vessel: a pot leg probably dating to the post-medieval period, c. AD 1500-1750.
The leg is sub-circular to sub-rectangular in cross-section, tapering gradually, but consistently, from one to the other; it is very worn at the terminal through abrasion. There is no clear decoration on the fragment, but much of the surface is corroded. The junction of the leg with the vessel interior has a dull, mid-grey patina.
Measurements: 65 mm length, up to 22 mm width; weight 81.78 g

A very worn fragment from a cast copper-alloy vessel: a pot leg probably dating to the post-medieval period, c. AD 1500-1750.
The leg is sub-triangular to sub-trapezoidal cross section with a flat back and an angled front. On the front there are suggestions of a central longitudinal ridge. A loss to one of the sides may have resulted in part from the leaching out of lead in the alloy during use (Naomi Payne pers. comm.)

A very worn fragment from a cast copper-alloy vessel: a pot leg/foot probably dating to the post-medieval period, c. AD 1500-1750.
The leg is D-shaped in cross section with a flat back and a convex front. Just below an old break is a prominent and wide transverse rib. The foot is so worn through in-life use that its original form has surely been lost, leaving a rounded terminal.
Measurements: 32 mm length, 25.5 mm width, 15.5 mm thickness, weight 44.03 g

Three lead vessel mends of uncertain date, possibly Roman given finds made in the vicinity.
All three have waisted centres to accommodate the vessel wall, above and below which sub-circular tops and bases. The largest retains a small sherd of what may be a greyware. It measures 30 mm by 24 mm by 8.5 mm and weighs 39.65 g. A smaller repair may also retain a small piece of greyware. It measures 21 mm by 15 mm by 9 mm and weighs 15.36 g. No pottery is retained in the smallest repair. This measures 18 mm by 14.5 mm by 8 mm and weighs 7.65 g.
Measurements: overall weight 62.66 g

A flat piece of copper-alloy sheet broadly of semicircular form, now incomplete, with two originally conical sheet rivets, now squashed to secure them. This is probably a vessel repair of medieval to post-medieval date. Small losses have occurred to the apparent semicircle on the curved edge. One of the rivets is central, with the other between this and the edge. The object has bent upwards around the breaks.
Measurements: length 34.5 mm, width 21 mm, thickness 0.5 mm (at plate), 2 mm at rivet, weight 3.48 g

A damaged and incomplete cast copper-alloy leg and foot from a later medieval to post-medieval cooking vessel. The object is splayed at the base in a simple, out-turned, pad-like foot of now sub-oval cross-section, significantly worn at both front corners, and probably abraded at the reverse corners. The front of the foot and the leg are faceted around the central longitudinal plane, giving the fragment a five-sided cross-section, with flat reverse. The long sides of the leg appear to be heavily abraded. The break where the leg would have joined the body of the vessel is old. The fl…

A zoomorphic copper-alloy spout probably from a ewer of later medieval or early post-medieval date. The spout is tubular and terminates in a particularly well rendered dog's head with open mouth; the tube spout protrudes from the open mouth. At the other end it curves through ninety degrees downwards, and expands into a long, pointed neck where it would have joined the vessel (it is tear shaped in cross-section). The surface that would have joined is bevelled and covered in file marks; within the neck the metal has been left as cast.
The dog's head has a moulded nose, prominent, sq…

A sheet copper alloy body fragment from a Medieval or Post-Medieval cast copper alloy vessel. There is no curvature to the fragment suggesting a reasonably deep straight-sided vessel. And this piece might have been used to patch the vessel as it has part of what appears to be a rivet hole at one edge which would have attached it to the main body of the vessel. The rivet is now missing and the hole is 5 mm in diameter. The interior and exterior of the fragment have a black residue all over it which suggests that it is burnt organic material formed when the vessel was used for cooking. …

A lead vessel repair of probable medieval date (c. AD 1100 - 1500). It is roughly oval in plan and H-shaped in cross-section with two irregularly shaped outer sides, one larger than the other, joined by a smaller central section. The smaller side is concave in the centre and the larger convex. Within the groove created between the outer sides there is a fragment of the original pot. The pottery is a red brown fabric with frequent (c.20%) medium-coarse sand temper. It is 21.1 mm by 19.7mm, 9.9 mm thick and weighs 19.23g.
Pot mends of this form are found in both Roman and Medieval pe…

A rim fragment from a Post-Medieval cast copper alloy vessel. It is a worn sub-triangular fragment broken along the sides. It has a low rim with a shallow curve on the inside. It shows internal sooting. It is 41.0 mm long, 28.0 mm wide and 4.0 mm in thickness. It weighs 15.83 g.
Crudely made cast copper alloy vessels were widely used from c. AD 1200-1700 for serving and cooking. Butler and Green (2003, p. 15) state 'there is evidence that (cast copper alloy) metal cooking vessels became increasingly common during the 13th and 14th centuries'. Although earlier copper alloy vessels…

A worn and probably miscast copper-alloy vessel fragment of medieval or post-medieval date. The piece is T-shaped in cross-section with an irregularly shaped slightly uneven 'base' which is slightly concave from end to end. This base appears to have very worn breaks around all the edges. From the probable outer side projects up a rectangular extension, 43.8mm wide, at right angles to the 'base'. This extension is flat, slightly curved when viewed from above and appears smoother on one side and irregular on the other, the outer edge (opposite the base) is irregular but rounded suggesti…
