An incomplete copper-alloy mount of medieval date (c. 14th century). This sheet mount takes the form of an equestrian scene depicting a knight on horseback, galloping left, his sword raised. Due to old breaks the horse's ears and legs, and the knight's shoulders and head, are missing. The knight is holding a triangular shield in his left hand which covers his upper body and is decorated with raised rim surrounding a triangular field divided by a slightly curved diagonal groove. His right arm is extended back over the rear of the horse&nbs…

An unusual porcine fitting of the insular La Tène tradition, probably dating from the 1st century BC to 1st century AD. It is possible this fitting is for a vessel, but it is so far unparalleled in type. There are two other ‘head’ fittings known (OXON-6E3722 and HESH-06696B), but they are very different in design, and this find does not appear to be related to them. The lack of the portrayal of tusks, a hint of a dorsal ridge and large, pointed, forward facing ears are not definitive enough to label this example a wild boar, and so it is classed as a porcine of mix…

A late early-medieval openwork copper-alloy zoomorphic mount, possibly from a strap or horse harness, dating to the 11th century AD. The mount is in the form of an animal's head and is convex on the front and hollow on the reverse. At the mount's upper edge two small, rounded projections are placed in the corners to represent the animal's ears. The animal then has a protruding hemispherical face that has two recessed swirls at the top for the eyes and a flaring triangle in the centre for the nose. Above the eyes are shallowly moulded recurving curls connected…

An incomplete copper-alloy possibly Medieval mount, dating to AD 1200-1250. It consists of a slightly tapering rectangular plate, which has a rectangular cross-section and an ornate loop protruding from the top edge; the lower edge has an old break now worn. The front face of the loop bears a moulding depicting a ribbon, which is centered on the top edge. Below the circular hole of the loop, on the front face of the plate there is a cast motif depicting an open hand emerging from a possible cloud. The surfaces are gilded, although on the back face little of the covering survives. "…

A fragmentary copper-alloy mount, probably a 'binding strip' of medieval date. At one end is the remnant of an oval expanded boss, hollow backed and perforated for attachment; it has broken across the hole (c. 3.8 mm wide). From the rounded end of the boss the strip emerges centrally, narrow compared to the boss. The strip continues straight (though in profile it has been distorted, probably as a result of old damage) until it expands into a loop which, again, has been broken across. This latter may have been for attachment, or may have been decorative. The strip is a sub-rectangu…

An incomplete or fragmentary copper-alloy mount of probable medieval to post-medieval date. The mount is flat and has stepped long edges formed of conjoined trapezoids that decrease in size: three such trapezoids survive to form the present object. The smallest trapezoid forms the terminal of the object and is bifurcated at its own terminal. It is also covered in an applied thin white metal sheet, which extends, abraded, into the adjacent trapezoid. On the reverse, at the terminal, is an integral rivet. The object has been curved in profile, and has been bent downwards in particu…

An incomplete copper-alloy plate, presumably from a strap, of probable medieval date. The plate is broadly rectangular, rounded at the surviving corners, having been abraded, and broken at the other short end where it has been bent upwards slightly as a result of old damage. The front is quite heavily scratched but appears to be undecorated. At the extant corners two integral rivets are present on the reverse. These have hammering marks between them. The object generally has a brown patina. It measures 27.7mm long by 13.5mm wide by 2.1mm thick; it weighs 4.53g

Post Medieval copper alloy sexfoil mount dating to the period c. AD 1500 - 1700. The mount has a moulded rim which follows the outline of a flower and a moulded sexfoil design on the obverse surface. Both the obverse and reverse exhibit holes from miscasting. The reverse exhibits a line of three integral truncated attachment lugs. The rim is damaged and both sides are corroded. Length: 35.6mm, Width: 32.8mm, Thickness: 3.1mm and Weight: 9.63g. Read (2001:33), illustrates two similar mounts, no.s 271 and 272, which he dates to the 17th century AD.

A copper-alloy mount of post-medieval date. The mount is oval in form and convex with a central integral stud of square cross-section on the lower surface. The shank of the stud has a blunted tip and has been bent to one side as a result of old damage. The mount has a general dull grey/green surface over metal that appears to be red-brown in hue. Many such mounts have been recorded on the PAS database, for example HAMP-3E53B6. The mount plausibly functioned as a strap-fitting or possibly as a furniture stud. It measures 20.7mm by 11.6mm by 9.0mm 'high', including the stud. It weigh…

The upper part of the mount survives and displays a facing animal head with prominent nose and large ears, comparable with the en-face animal heads on stirrup-strap mounts of Williams's Class B. It can be compared with an example from Suffolk recorded on this database: SF-1BADBE.

A corroded post-medieval cast copper-alloy mount of 17th to 18th-century date. It has a flat oval body. From each shorter end of the body protrude a slightly raised trefoil terminal and flared terminal respectively. Each terminal features a pair of crude grooves to delineate the designs. From the flat back emerge two integral prongs. These spring from circular bases at the trefoilate terminal and the junction of the body with the other terminal. A copper-alloy mount of uncertain date. It is symmetrical, formed of a sub-rectangular central plate with rounded triangular protrusions at each short end. It is thin, flat, and plain on both surfaces. The long sides both feature a semicircular cutout centrally. At the ends of the triangular protrusions is a small perforation for attachment; one of the holes has abraded through. The object has a dark-green patina where it survives but is otherwise corroded and lighter.

A rectangular object, probably a mount, cast in copper alloy of probable late early-medieval date (c. 9th/10th century AD). Broadly rectangular, it has slightly concave long sides. Both short ends are slightly ragged with irregular protrusions, it is unclear whether these are unfinished or old breaks. It is probable the object previously continued below the lower edge where there is the stub of a projection which is narrower than the existing piece. A broken copper-alloy mount of post-medieval date, though it is uncertain to what it would have belonged. Formed of one piece the object has two zones, the smaller a thinner handle-like end, broken and slightly bent and twisted one way following old damage. From this smaller end (general W.: c. 8.6mm) the object begins to widen before a transverse groove on the upper surface which divides the handle end from the larger zone. The larger end continues to expand very gradually along its length, attaining a width of 17.4mm at an old ragged break. The mount has a rectangular cross-secti…

A cast copper-alloy mount of post-medieval date (c.AD 1600-1750), plausibly a harness fitting. The mount has a heart-shaped plate that is very shallowly convex at the front and concave at the rear. The central element of this feature is pointed and the two side fleurs are small and rounded, set at right angles to it.
