Lead alloy weight, probably a spindle whorl dating from the 13th-15th century AD. The weight is rectangular in cross-section and circular in shape with a central hole for the spindle. All surfaces are patinated white and rough to the touch. The upper surface of the whorl is decorated with four large Xs between four large raised moulded dots. The reverse/underside appears undecorated Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated lead-alloy weights are very rare finds in excavations,…

Lead alloy weight, probably a spindle whorl dating from the 13th-15th century AD. The weight is biconical in cross-section and circular in shape with a central hole for the spindle. All surfaces are patinated white and rough to the touch. The whorl is decorated with an untidy criss/cross pattern, probably a number of 'X's within linear borders (possibly pseudo lettering). The decoration is the same on obverse and reverse. The spindle whorl was made in the same mould or from the same mould template as LANCUM-2C663F. Copper alloy trade weight, dating from the late 16th to early 19th century, but very likely to be Georgian, 18th century. It was probably part of a stacked set, possibly with LANCUM-236ECD which was found nearby. The surface is very worn and but the stamps are still visible: the ewer which was stamped on approved weights by the London Founders Company between 1590-1826, and the arms of England (St George cross) with a small sword inside the upper left quarter - the symbol for the City of London, as well as another, single, sword. No royal cipher survives that would help date it more a…

Miscast lead alloy weight, probably a spindle whorl dating from the medieval period, that is c. AD1200-1500. The weight is complete in one side, but miscast and unfinished on the other. Lead alloy weight, probably a spindle whorl dating from the 13th-15th century AD.The weight is roughly circular in shape and has a biconial cross-section. Unlike other weights/whorls, this object was moulded to have a central perforated tube and four spokes which were connected by an outer ring which is now indented, giving the object a square shape with rounded-off corners. This would be an unusual, uncommon shape for a spindle whorl, as they are normally cast in one piece without spokes or an outer ring. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated co…

Flat circular lead weight probably dating from the late medieval or post-medieval period, c. 15th-17th century. The weight is of flat circular form with a perforation through the centre, possibly for a string or a an iron hook, so that it could be used as both standing or balance weight or steelyard (hanging) weight. There are no official markings or stamps on the obverse or reverse making it an unofficial, home-made weight. Without context these weights are extremely difficult to date if they are of generic shape and form and not, e.g. a bust or geometrical or else, or have offici…

Conical lead alloy standing or balance weight, probably dating from the late medieval or early post-medieval period, c. 15th-17th century. The weight is cast with an off-centre apex and a rounded bottom. There are two holes in the bottom, but they do not seem to join, so perhaps it was a standing rather than a suspended weight. There are no official marks or stamps on the weight. Without context these weights are extremely difficult to date if they are of generic shape and form and not, e.g. a bust or geometrical or else, have official stamps or seals.
