An incomplete, 2-piece Colchester derivative, Harlow  brooch. The semi-cylindrical side wings and upper bow end of a 2-piece copper alloy Colchester B brooch. These brooches have their springs secured by passing the external chord and the axial bar through a lug with 2 perforations behind the head. The spring, pin and much of the bow and catchplate are missing. A raised ridge runs from the crest vertically down the bow and is a derivative of the original front hook feature. The thick, 3mm circular section bow has probably been deliberately broken. Late 1st century. Similar t…

An incomplete, upper half of a copper alloy Colchester derivative, Harlow brooch of CD Ha 3.b. The wings, spring and upper bow survive. The spring housing consists of a hollow cylinder with two perforated ends, through which the copper alloy axis bar is located. The bi-lateral spring has 2 coils on one side and 4 on the other, the pin having snapped off as it leaves the spring. The chord passes in front of and quite low down beneath the spring and is held in place by a perforated lug. This allows a clear view of the spring. A raised vertical rib running down from the lug is a design r…

A medieval to post-medieval copper-alloy book clasp anchor-plate of flat, rectangular form with triangular terminal and bevelled edges. The eye consists of two arms rolled over around an iron spindle. No decoration is discernible. There are two empty rivet holes, one almost central and one near the point. Similar to PAS ref. SF-B765A1. Book clasps such as this are noted from excavated contexts in medieval London, with good parallels to this example still in situ on the original book apparent in Egan (2005; nos 592-593) and dated to the 15th-16th centuries AD.

An incomplete, iron strip brooch of Late Iron Age - Early Roman date. The top of the brooch rolls back to form a cylinder which appears to have a slot in the centre at the rear for the pin, most of which remains. The whole of the artefact is heavily encrusted with corrosion obscuring any detail. The bow is truncated resulting in the loss of the catchplate. Suggested date 25 - 60AD. Possibly an incomplete Roman, copper alloy hairpin or possibly a cosmetics applicator. The end of this artefact represents a duck, looking over its back with its beak slightly raised. The body is on a horizontal plane as if swimming on water. An indentation for the eye may suggest it was decorated possibly with enamel or a stone but there is no evidence for this. Beneath the duck is a damaged square fronted cell containing some turqoiuse enamel, the back of this is rounded and it is not possible to see whether the continuing part was solid or hollow.
