Object type: NEEDLE
Broad period: IRON AGE

A complete bone needle with off-centre eye. The needle splays out to accommodate the eye then tapers to a long (54.3mm) point at one end with a rounded section and a shorter (32.8mm), marginally broader point at the other with a flatter section. The bone used has a natural, gentle curve and it is on the outer, convex surface that the hollow diaphysis has been left to frame the eye like a larger human eye. The needle is an even, light cream colour with a polish over its entire surface.

Record ID: PUBLIC-F43E54
Object type: NEEDLE
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: West Berkshire

An incomplete bone needle, broken across the eye. This needle was possibly an off-centre holed type, similar to the two intact ones found on the site PAS records PUBLIC-F45615 and PUBLIC-F46D28). The remaining point is 44.5mm long and 4.5mm at the eye with an oval section becoming rounder towards the tip. It has a patchy light brown/cream colouration with quite a rough surface. This needle was excavated from a posthole and is very similar to PUBLIC-40962, also found on site.

An incomplete bone needle, broken off mid-point, at the eye. This needle was probably an off-centre holed type, similar to the two intact ones found on the site PAS records PUBLIC-45615 and PUBLIC-F46D28. The remaining point is 41mm long, 6mm at the widest part with a flattened oval section and tapers gradually to the tip. It is a cream colour with a smooth and shiny surface, probably polished through much usage being pulled through textiles. Approximately 16mm up from the tip there appears to be rodent tooth marks.
