Object type: BRIDLE BIT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy bridle cheekpiece of Early Medieval to Medieval date. The piece consists of an openwork plate of sub-triangular form. The shortest side of the piece is not original, each of the three projecting prongs having been broken in antiquity. The other sides appear to have survived in their original forms. The upper surface of the object bears moulded and incised zoomorphic pattern of uncertain nature. The point at the narrow end takes the form of a right-facing zoomorphic head, with recessed eye, crest and upturned snout. A curved projection beneath this snout…

A copper-alloy zoomorphic knife handle of Roman date. The handle is of octagonal section and increases in dimensions towards the attachment end. At the opposite end is a terminal in the form of a stylised zoomorphic (possibly canine or feline) head. The snout is conical, projecting from between two vertical grooves; the mouth is formed of a horizontal groove on the underside of the head; each brow ridge and ear consists of a single moulding. Decorating the neck is a series of punched ring-and-dot marks. The terminal is separated from the rest of the handle by a moulded ring comprisi…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy weight of probable Late Medieval to early post-Medieval date. The weight takes the form of a thin circular disc. At the centre is a slightly raised ring with a small circular depression containing an unidentified white substance. This raised moulding is mirrored on the reverse and suggests that the object was turned on a lathe. Numerous concentric grooves and ridges on the reverse support this theory. On the upper surface are an inner and outer pair of deliberate, decorative rings. The artefact measures 59.9mm in diameter, 5.4mm thick and weighs 103.35g.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire

A copper-alloy coin weight, probably for a half or quarter noble. This weight is illustrated in 'Lions, ships and angels' (Withers, 1995, p. 20). It was made in Antwerp by an unknown maker (see Withers, p. 60). The weight is rectangular in plan. The obverse bears a circular panel depicting a ship, with a letter 'h' (for 'Henricus') located to the right of the mast. On the reverse is a central hand dividing the letters 'D I'; an inner ring of stars surrounds this central design and, around this, is a second ring, of four large and four small fleurs-de-lys. The object measures 14.…
