Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy double looped asymmetrical buckle, with an intact strap bar. One loop is rectangular, the other is rounded. The frame is uninterrupted; so therefore has no pin recess. The pin is missing, but iron staining indicates where it once was. Leather survives in the rectangular aperture. The metal has lost most of its original surface and the metal is a dark reddish-brown colour. This type of buckle dates from circa 1575 – 1700. Parallels for this type of buckle can be seen in Whitehead, 2003, p90.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy rectangular shoe or knee buckle, with a drilled frame for separate spindle. The remains of an iron pin survive as corrosion in the spindle holes. There is no pin recess. The outer edges of the frame are serrated, with moulded grooves on the sides and ends of the frame. This buckle would once have had a copper alloy stud chape and tongue, which no longer survives. The buckle is a dark greyish-brown colour and the surface is slightly pitted. These buckles date from circa 1690 - 1720. Parallels for this type of buckle can be seen in Whitehead, 2003, p101, No. 644.
