Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy finger ring. The ring is 'D' shaped in section and circular in plan. The inner face is flattened. The ring is completely plain making dating it to a particular period problematic. A finger ring of this type could date from the Iron Age to Post-Medieval date. However, the patina of the copper alloy, an even dark green, is typical of Roman finds from this area.

A red material, which may be enamel, moulding clay or wax (although wax would be unlikely to survive). The red material is covered in a layer of copper alloy, poured over the red material when in liquid state. The centre of the upper surface has a circular depression with, in relief, a central figure crouching left. The exact function and purpose of this object is unclear. It may be an aborted or failed attempt to cast a coin, medal or token using modelling clay.

Ovan strip of lead with a circular impression. The impression apperas to be of a feline/wolf looking upwards. The faint lettering to the left appears to be AVG. AVG would suggest a Roman coin. However, the characters are in relief, meaning that the impression is unlikely to be of a coin. The impression is 15mm in diameter.

A roughly cast, solid, sub-circular object of copper alloy. The reverse is uneven, with signs that it has been cuttlefish cast and no attempt at shaping or filing away the roughness, suggesting that this side was never meant to be seen. The upper face is curved, making the piece D-shaped in section. Several U shaped have been stamped into the upper surface creating a border and leaving the central area plain. This object appears to be an unfinsihed piece, possibly an apprentise piece or waste. With few disgnostic features, dating this object is difficult. The even dark green patina …

Terminal end of copper-alloy snake-headed bracelet. Late Roman. Rectangular in section, 3mm thick. The underside has no decoration. The upper surface has several lines, or narrow grooves, cast into it to give the impression of a snakes head. Two grooves begin from each side of the piece, starting from the widest part of the bracelet and tapering inwards, mirroring the pointed end/term…

A damaged and distorted Roman gold filigree finger-ring. The hoop is slender, of softened rectangular cross-section. The shoulders and bezel comprise an openwork design based on an eye-shaped frame of beaded wire enclosing two concentric filigree wire circles (the outer plain, the inner beaded), with a symmetrical arrangement of four circular pellets (one missing) at the centre. One of the shoulders preserves two (of, probably, three) similar pellets, but all are missing from the other shoulder. The outer face of the bezel displays traces of heavy or prolonged wear.
