Object type: JETTON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A slightly worn copper-alloy jetton of medieval date. This piece is an example of the French 'King under canopy' series and, according to Mitchiner (1988, p. 161-164), was struck during the reign of Charles IV or Philip VI (1326-1337 AD). Many variations on this type exist and no exact parallel could be found. The legend on the jetton upon which this piece is based reads: 'DE LATON SUI: IEGETTON, OEI', meaning 'I am of latten: a jetton, yes'. This example is classified as a variation on Mitchiner nos. 392-399. It measures 21.8mm in diameter, 0.9mm thick and weighs 2.53g.

A heavily clipped and worn silver Long-cross penny, possibly of Henry VI or Edward IV. It seems probable, given the amount of clipping, that this coin was clipped down to act as a half penny. It measures 13.4mm in diameter by 0.1mm thick and weighs 0.58g.

A worn and corroded silver Long-cross penny of Edward I. The style of the lettering - in particular the "R" - suggests that this is probably a Class 10ab coin, in which case it would date from 1300-1305AD (see J.J.North; 1989; pp. 44). It measures 17.6mm in diameter by 0.6mm thick and weighs 1.23g.
