Incomplete Roman copper-alloy finger ring fragment with glass setting, dated AD c.100-300. Oval bezel with high straight sides tapering to the hoop which is broken off. Blue-green glass setting damaged, apparently heat affected and with part broken away; there is a narrow line of red around part of the edge of the glass where it meets the bezel - posibly corrosion product connected to the type of adhesive used. Bezel length 13.8mm, width 9.6mm, thickness 8.5mm, overall thickness including broken hoop 11.4mm, weight 3.9g.

An incomplete Early Medieval cast copper alloy broadly globular pin. The head consists of integrally joined together hexagons forming a globular protrusion. The head has been decorated with circular indentations with pellets inside, or a ring and dot motif. There is a small collar at the base of the head that protrudes slightly. The shaft is narrow and circular in section, it protrudes from the centre of the collar at the base. Other examples of this type of object have been recorded on the database including YORYM-0AA508.

An incomplete copper-alloy medieval D-shaped buckle frame (c. 1350-1400). At the rounded outer edge of the frame is a collared knop. The pin is missing. The pin bar is recessed for missing plate, and worn in the middle from the action of the pin. Along the outer edge on either side and just above the pin bar, are two small projecting triangular spurs.. cf. An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative (dolphin) bow brooch dating to c. AD 43-120. The brooch has semi-cylindrical wings that are decorated with a series of circumferential grooves. The bow projects from the wings, curving and tapering into a pointed foot, behind which are the remains of the catch-plate. The pin is missing. The bow is also decorated with a number of slight circumferential grooves, giving it a ribbed appearance.

While this object was initially described as a cannon ball there is no doubt that it is in fact a fossil sponge and dates from the Cretaceous period. These objects are flint and not uncommon in chalk areas of the country. The slightly irregular, spherical shape and the small scar are typical features. Any future finds should not be recorded.

I have examined a group of 10 coins found at Ticknall, Derbyshire. Nine of them are official silver pennies of the kings of England and will therefore be of the traditional sterling standard, over 90% fine metal. The remaining one is a sterling imitation produced by a continental ruler, John the Blind, king of Bohemia and count of Luxemburg, a type that was imported to England in large numbers, and were known as lusshbournes; they are often found here.
