Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An irregular struck flake of Neolithic date (4000-2500 BC). The flake has been struck in multiple directions during the tertiary phase of the tool production most probably during the making of a large core tool - the flake shows multiple removals in opposing directions on the dorsal face. It is relatively thin and a mid grey colour. It is possible that it may have been worked along one edge to form a crude scraper The flake measures 28.1mm in length, 13.7mm width, is 6.6mm thick and weighs 2.89 grams.

A snapped flint waste flake (debitage) from tool production of probable earleir Neolithic date (4000 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and sub-triangular cross section. The flake has been snapped from a larger blade like flake and reworked along one edge on the dorsal face to create a crude cutting edge. It is highly likely that this flake was a by-product (or waste flake / debitage) of tool making; if this is the case then it is from the tertiary (3rd) phase of flaking as all the cortex has been removed. This waste flake has then been re-used or utilised to form a …

A snapped flint waste flake (debitage) from tool production of probable Neolithic date (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly in oval plan and sub-triangular cross section. The flake has been snapped from a larger blade like flake and reworked along one edge on both ventral and dorsal faces to create a crude cutting edge. It is highly likely that this flake was a by-product (or waste flake / debitage) of tool making; if this is the case then it is from the secondary phase of flaking as the dorsal face has around 50% of the cortex remaining. This waste flake has then been re-used or ut…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead alloy weight with a circular cast hole and transverse bar across the centre. The upper surface is domed whilst the reverse is broken revealing a hollow centre. One long edge has a irregular oval shaped socket and it seems most likely that this weight was cast onto a larger object. As such it is most likely to be of a modern date (1600-1800) The weight measures: 26.2mm in diameter, 16.7mm high and weighs 32.11 grams

Object type: CANDLE STAND
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post medieval copper alloy terminal from a candle push-up ejector handle dating to the 18th century. The terminal is an openwork trefoil with a projecting stub with a hand cut screwthread. The shank is threaded to screw into the wooden ejector, which fitted inside the stem of the candlestick. The stem was slotted to allow vertical movement of the handle and ejector. John Caspall in, Fire and Light in the home pre-1820 (Antique Collectors' Club, 2000) shows similar examples. Dimensions: length: 37.9mm; width: 22.9mm; thickness: 3.9mm; weight: 7.67 grams. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy strap fitting or belt mount / stud or mount of probable post medieval date (1600-1800). The plate is heavily eroded and corroded and therefore partially illegible. It comprises a square shaped plate with bevelled edges. The front face is deeply incised with a set of initials - cypher - J M - in copper plate style writing with many curlicues and embellishments. The style of decoration is best paralleled with 18th century book and harness mounts. The reverse face is flat - with four rectangular studs projecting from each corner - all are worn and abraded. The mount is …

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy stud or mount of probable post medieval date (1600-1800). The stud is very large and is probably from a piece of harness or more likely furniture. The head of the stud is circular in plan with a smooth heavily patinated green surface - the external edge is decorated with a rossette formed by cutting semicircular (D shaped) removals. The centre of the stud is decorated with a seated dog / hound - possibly a greyhound which is enclosed within a broad wide cast raised border. There is no evidence of applied surface - but it is possibly it was once silvered. The shank of…

A broken and incomplete folded and cut sheet metal strap fitting / belt mount from a medieval buckle (AD 1250-1450). Only the upper plate is present and it is broken into two conjoining parts along a recent break. The plate is rectangular in plan being formed from a single sheet - a single rectangular tab has been cut at the mid-point on the folded edge. The plate would have been wrapped around the strap bar of the now lost D shaped buckle; the U shaped removal / tab would have allowed for a separate buckle pin to be fitted. Two pierced rivet holes are present on the folded end - one …

Two heavily worn and apparently fused copper alloy Roman coins - both are too poorly preserved for more detailed recording and were either Radiates or Nummi (AD 260-360). The act of fusing is uncertain - both flans are irregular in shape and conjoined along one overlapping edge apparent on one face - the opposing side is corroded and it is uncertain if the two parts are fused through heat, corrosion or potentially conjoined or distorted through another process.

A highly eroded and corroded copper alloy fragment of a radiate or nummus of uncertain date AD 260 - 360. The coin is too poorly preserved to identify further. One face of the coin has a heavily eroded fragment of Roman pottery adhering to the surface - welded by surface corrosion products. The pottery is heavily laminated but a clear oxidised (orange) exterior surface and reduced (grey) interior is present. Not enough survives to be certain of the vessel - but the fabric is similar to Severn Valley Ware and the potential thin walled nature of sherd indicates a small cup or tanka…

A square (or lozenge / diamond) shaped cast sheet metal artefact - most probably of later medieval or post medieval date (AD 1250-1700). The upper surface is uniform in width and length, the sides are all faceted / bevelled. The surface is smooth and well patinated. There is no incised or applied decoration. The reverse face is similar patinated but has a rougher surface. A central grey line divides the piece in half from corner to corner - this is possibly the remains of a grey solder - suggesting this plate was applied to either another object or possibly a long pin. A direct parall…

Cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is a pointed oval shape in plan and a slightly domed rectangle in profile; the edges are bevelled. The long edges are scalloped and in form it seems to be a very debased and highly stylised fleur-de-lis. The reverse face of the fitting is broadly flat and undecorated. Two cast sub-rectangular projections (hooks) extend from either end of the fitting; both of these are splayed and the tips broken; they have sub-rectangular shaped cross sections. These hooks would have passed thro…
