Cast lead or lead alloy artefact in the shape of a hammer of unknown date and function. The hammer is formed in two parts, the handle and head, which are joined together by inserting the handle through a hole in the head. This has been secured through the head by the top of the handle being struck like a rivet and flattened. The hammer head is irregular in shape and broadly oval in cross section. It tapers and expands evenly along its length. The handle is oval in cross section and sub-rectangular in plan. There is no decoration on any part of the object. It measures 44.2mm length, 19.…

An irregular fragment of an unknown object / artefact of unknown date. The fragment is regular in plan comprising a relatively shallow sub-rectangular plate which is broken at one edge. From the opposite end an integrally cast spike extends at an angle of 90° from the upper plate. This spike tapers along its length terminating in a rounded point. The upper plate has a similarly shaped hollow (U shaped) recess the function of which is unknown due to its fragmentary nature. The artefacts measures 46.3mm length, 17.8mm width, is a maximum of 29.5mm thick (and minimum of 4.4mm), and weigh…

Ground and polished stone spindle whorl of probable late Prehistoric- later medieval date (-2000 BC – 1500 AD). The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan, its diameter measures 38mm and is 11.5mm thick. There is a circular drilled hole through the whorl and this is set slightly off centre: it is also egg-timer shaped caused by drilling from both faces. The diameter of the hole measures 7.9mm. The whorl weighs 22.3 grams. The whorl is undecorated and the edges are worn. The whorl is made from course sandstone which has been shaped so that it is lentoid in cross section. The sandst…

Fragment of cast copper alloy of unknown function and unknown date. In plan the artefact is sub-rectangular with rounded tip and base, in profile it is lentoid. One long edge is slightly curved and it is possible that this may represent a bevelled cutting edge, possibly of a razor or spearhead. If this were the case the artefact is most likely to date from the later Bronze Age (post 1500 BC). However, the surface patina has been removed through abrasion in the soil and there are no other indicative marks which would suggest the function of the artefact. In conclusion the artefact is to…

Two pierced stone water worn pebbles of unknown date or function. The two pebbles are of differing sizes but each have a single pierced hole which is perforated diagonally from one edge to the other. Both holes differ in size and do not seem to be drilled, in that there profile does not conform to the usual (egg-timer) shape. There also seems to be little wear on the holes. It has been suggested by the finder that they may be beads and this is a possibility, the discovery of them together also increases the likelihood of this idea. Pebble 1 measures 22.7mm length, 13.8mm width, is 1…

Unidentified artefact of unknown date, most probably Roman (50-400AD) although this is based on patina and feel rather than direct parallel. The artefact is a cast copper alloy sub-rectangular fitting. It tapers slightly from end to end and has two irregular projections at either end emanating from the reverse face. The upper one of these consists of a transverse bar which projects 5mm and is vertical on one face and stepped on the other. The lower projection is also formed from a transverse bar but is much wider being broadly Crescentic in shape with a distinct central band and two ou…

An incomplete cast lead alloy (or possibley copper alloy with high tin content) artefact, of unknown post Roman date (50 - 1800AD). The object is most probably the sprue / casrting well from the vent of a mould and theerfore attributed to casting waste / casting by-product. The object is shaped like a four sided pyramid with rounded edges. It is undecorated and light grey in colour. It has a smooth well formed patina except on some of the faces where abrasion has occured. At the top of the pyramid is a projecting cylindrical stump, this is where the runner / jet of the casting was …

An iron hooked artefact of unknown date. The hooked terminal is well formed. It is irregular in width and thickness along its length. The hooked part is sub-rectangular and relatively thin in section. It is uniform along its length and expands dramatically at the junction with the integral spike which is triangular in plan and rectangular in cross section. The end of the spike is lost. A direct parallel has not been found. It is possible due to the nature of the site that these are Roman in date although due to the nature of the artefact type and its longevity it is very difficul…

An iron hooked artefact of unknown date. The hooked terminal is well formed from a length of square sectioned iron bar albeit crudely worked. It tapers along its length; the terminal is bent into a U shape. A direct parallel has not been found. It is possible due to the nature of the site that these are Roman in date although due to the nature of the artefact type and its longevity it is very difficult to date specifically. Two pieces of copper alloy industrial waste or slag, of probable Medieval dating (11th to 15th Century). 1: measures 53.9mm in length, 29.9mm wide and 10.7mm thick. It weighs 32.2 grams. 2: measures 31.0mm in length, 22.6mm wide and 25.7mm thick. It weighs 13.7 grams. Together both pieces weigh 45.9 grams. A cast lead alloy mount in the form of a stylished fish or dolphin. The dolphin has an arched back, with the slightly forked tail bending round to meet the back. This is very similar to Roman depictions of the dolphin. Under the head, it is flattened to form a basic base, it is possible that this area formed an attachment area to another object. The casting seam is visible on the internal curve of the arched back. It measures 48.63mm in length, 34.64mm height and is 11.64mm thick. It weighs 59.2 grams. Incomplete cast copper alloy fragment of unknown function and date. The fragment seems to be a looped terminal off set at 90 degrees on a sub-rectangular bar. The bar is broken near the terminal and the break is relatively recent and unpatinated. The rectangular bar is faceted being broadly D shaped in cross section. The looped terminal has a cast and slightly recessed hole through it; this is oval in shape and does not seem to be worn. No parallel of any form or date has yet been found. Cast copper alloy fragment of unknown function or date. The fragment is broadly square in plan with an irregular cast triangular shaped hole through the centre. From the upper edge a sub-rectangular shaped shank extends which is broken and badly abraded. The fragment is a mid green colour with a polished but badly abraded patina. No direct parallel for this artefact has been found. It is possible that it may be the looped terminal from a medieval padlock key but the slight nature of this artefact might preclude this. An incomplete cast copper alloy unidentified object, possibly a bridle fitting, of uncertain date 300 BC - 1900 AD. The fragment is similar in shape to bridle fittings known from the later Iron Age and early Roman periods, however, the weight and surface patina both suggest a more modern (Georgian) date. The fragment is irregular in plan being formed from an oval (tear shaped) loop whose narrow terminal expands into a wider loop which is broken near the junction. The extant loop is sub-rectangular in cross section with faceted / bevelled edges; where it expands to the broken loop it t…

Cast lead alloy weight of unknown date probably later medieval or modern 1300-1800 AD. The weight is sub-circular in plan and D shaped in profile; in cross section it is an irregular rectangle. Through the centre is a sub-circular hole (5.6mm x 6.9mm). There is no sign of decoration and the weight is a mid grey colour with an even, but powdery corrosion. Similar weights have been dated to both the Roman and the medieval periods however it is most likely that this is of medieval date, probably for use as a net or line weight.
