Description: A fragment of gold sheet foil with a series of decorative applied repousse marks presented on the outer face. Due to the condition and the small size of the fragment the overall design is unclear. The sheet has been folded into two and it is difficult to establish if this is deliberate and post depositional or later damage in the ploughsoil. What remains of the decorative design consists of a series of nine circular pointille bosses formed with a round headed punch or awl that has been worked from the underside to create the form. If this is the case then the coin would have been struck under the authority of Archbishop Thomas Rotherham (1480-1500). The inscription has been almost entirely removed and the identification is based solely on the marks by the breast and estimated size and style of the coin. A cast copper alloy porcine (boar/pig's head) vessel / bucket mount dating to the Late Iron Age 100 BC – AD 50. The mount is irregular in plan being broadly sub-rectangular in form and is sub-oval shaped in cross section; it has a relatively flat bottom which expands and then tapers in a broad curved upper surface. The mount varies in width and thickness along the length. It is both widest and thickest at the "back" of the head / across the ears. From this point its width and thickness narrows drastically, creating a rounded forehead from which the snout extends. This snout wid…

Object type: SUNDIAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A relatively well-preserve copper alloy pocket (poke) sundial, probably dating from the seventeenth century. The artefact is a circular ring of brass with a small suspension loop or hoop on one edge. The loop is staple shaped and has been fixed through the ring through two drilled holes. A central recessed groove runs circumferentially around the exterior of the ring, this has been perforated in two places with a long slots. The sliding section (now missing) would have sat within this groove and moved around the slot - this element would have been pierced with a single hole which coul…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy 'Winchester style' strap end of later Early Medieval (10th - 11th century) date. The strap end is near complete having only lost a small part of the riveted plate through abrasion which has feathered the edge. The strap end is a broadly rectangular (tongue shaped) form with a rounded base and off-set riveted attachment plate. The stepped attachment plate is pierced unevenly probably originally in four places - although only three holes survive. The body of the strap end is relatively thick terminating at the base with an abraded projecting knop. A cast and incised …

This find has been recorded from images provided by the finder - it is hoped that it will be brought to the museum for further study after the pandemic The palstave measures approximately 155mm in length and is 50mm wide across the blade and 30mm wide across the hafting…

An irregular incomplete cast lead alloy vessel repair (pot mend) of probable Roman date (50-400). In plan the repair is broadly oval in shape and irregular in cross section; originally it would have been H shaped but it has been snapped across the mid-point and only a small projecting nub survives. These types of mend were used during many different periods but this example has been found with other datable Roman finds The vessel repair measures 24mm length, and is 20mm wide

A near complete cast copper alloy key handle of Roman date (AD 50-300). The fragment consists of the upper ornamental openwork key handle, and part of the socketed junction which would have joined to the iron shank. The key fragment is irregular in plan and profile. The junction with the iron shaft is sub rectangular in both plan and profile and contains part of the iron shank of the body of the key which is broken but relatively un-corroded. Part of thee junction box is lost due to an old eroded break - each of the four faces are decorated with a series of three horizontal cast bands…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy headstud brooch of Roman date (75-200AD). The head of the brooch is incomplete as the sides are lost through erosion; this has resulted in the loss of the spring fixing mechanism. An integrally cast head plate extends from the upper edge of the head - the upper edge is rolled back to form an eroded hook and a circular hole pierces it at the centre. The reverse face of the head is flat and the two D shaped lugs which would have held the sprung pin are lost. The bow is comma shaped extending at an angle of 90 degrees from the head of the brooch. It tapers in …

A near complete copper alloy two-piece bow brooch of Roman date (AD 60-200). This find has been recorded from images supplied by the finder - it seems as if this brooch is a hybrid between a Polden Hill and a Wirral style brooch. The wings are complete with flat and pierced end caps. The axis bar and part of the spring are present; the axis bar is formed from a length of copper alloy wire and holds the spring and pin in place. The fragment of spring has been turned four times and would have been fixed to the head by an external cord fixed to a rearward facing hook positioned at the mi…

An abraded tertiary debitage / waste flake of probable later Neolithic date or Early Bronze Age date (3500-1800 BC). From the form of the flake it is possible that this is an aborted barbed and tanged arrowhead discarded during knapping. A large pale grey coloured inclusion is present that would have prevented finer working. The flake is irregular in form having been struck as a blade like flake. One edge has been worked to create a pseudo-tang. The dorsal face is more heavily worked than the ventral although there is no evidence of retouch / finer working. The flint is a dark grey bl…

The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and wedge shaped in cross section. The retouch has been applied to only the dorsal face on two edges and is best described as poorly organised short, sub-parallel and semi-abrupt.
