An uncertain object of uncertain date - most probably made in the medieval or post medieval period (1200-1800). In form the artefact is similar to a thimble being a domed sheet of lead which has subsequently been crushed in the soil. The artefact is crudely decorated with a series of opposing triangular cut out shapes positioned irregular around the lower edge. The lower edge / base is decorated with incised / filed irregular sized dog-tooth pattern. At the top of the dome is the remains of an iron rivet. The artefact is a mid grey colour with a deep incised scar on the upper edge. No…

A cast copper alloy artefact of unknown function of probable Roman date. The artefact is irregular in plan and flat in profile. A single cast beaded / raised rib separate the plate into two parts, either side of this rib are marks that might be described as laureate wreaths. The reverse is plain and undecorated. The artefact is a mid grey green colour with a well formed patina - it is recovered from an area rich in later Roman artefacts and coins. The artefact measures 19.1mm length, 24.1mm width, is 2.3mm across the plate and the rib projects 0.6mm. It weighs 4.01 grams

A square (or lozenge / diamond) shaped cast sheet metal artefact - most probably of later medieval or post medieval date (AD 1250-1700). The upper surface is uniform in width and length, the sides are all faceted / bevelled. The surface is smooth and well patinated. There is no incised or applied decoration. The reverse face is similar patinated but has a rougher surface. A central grey line divides the piece in half from corner to corner - this is possibly the remains of a grey solder - suggesting this plate was applied to either another object or possibly a long pin. A direct parall…

A complex cast copper alloy artefact of uncertain function and date. The artefact comprises an openwork oval shaped cage surmounted by a bulbous knop which is pierced by a transverse oval shaped hole. The artefact is cast in a single piece and the openwork cage consists of four evenly spaced arms aligned vertically that enclose an oval shaped space c. 16.3mm diameter and 15.2mm high. Where the arms meet on the lower edge a flat oval shaped disc is formed - this is pierced by a rectangular hole (3.6mm x 2.4mm). On the upper edge a thickened sub rectangular domed knop or boss extends me…

Two almost identical cast copper alloy artefacts of unknown function but of most probable later post medieval or modern date (AD 1650 -1850). In shape and size both artefacts are very similar being semi-circular (D shaped) in plan and sub-rectangular in profile with a distinctive external chamfered edge. The two external pointed edges possibly suggest that a rectangular bar extended from each. Both also have a vertically aligned groove on both faces. In form they most resemble the external edges of buckle frames. They both have a light grey green colour with a powdery surface patina. D…

A large broadly triangular piece of iron of uncertain function or date. The iron fragment is hammer worked and is broadly D shaped in cross section. It is pierced in four places - at the apex, twice on the base and singly at the midpoint. The surface is irregular and the reverse face has several areas of spalling and corrosion. The artefact is recorded due to the upper surface seeming to have a series of interlaced designs along the midpoint / spine. This interpretation is uncertain due to condition. Given the form and shape it is possible that this is from a decorative hinge from eit…

A cast leaded copper alloy fitting of uncertain function and date. It is broken into two parts although the two ends conjoin to form a single broken artefact. The fitting is broadly rectangular in plan - although it is much distorted in plan and profile. At the centre of one of the broken parts a rectangular lozenge headed element extends. It is uncertain if this is functional or decorative. There are no drilled holes or fixing points present; likewise there is no applied or incised decoration. The metal is a mid-grey green colour with a corroded surface patina. A direct parallel ha…

An irregular fragment of cast copper alloy plate of uncertain date. The fragment is broadly rectangular in plan and cross section. All edges are heavily eroded and abraded; they do not represent the original edges. The upper surface has a poorly preserved cast pattern comprising radiating elements between oval lentoid open loops. It has a deep green coloured surface patina. A direct parallel has not been found although it is highly likely that it is from the rim of a decorated metal dish - possibly a chafing dish of later medieval date (AD 1200 - 1600). The fragment measures: 33.…

A small square shaped gold coloured possibly gold (and copper) alloyed piece of casting waste / manufacturing offcut from thick sheet / ingot of uncertain date. The metal is flat and rectangular in section; one edge has a very slight bevel to it whilst the other three have cut edges. Theer is no sign of saw marks and it looks to have been cut with a cold chisel - or been snapped. Two of the cut edges have a slightly corroded surface whilst the upper and lower ones have small pit marks. No obvious nick marks or cutting can be seen on any surface and the form of the ingot is not diagnos…

An incomplete artefact of unknown date and function; it is most likely to be part from a knife handle (counter weight) of post medieval date. The plate is an irregular octagonal shape (square with the corners removed) and rectangular in cross section. Through the centre is a rectangular slot (7.8mm x 2.6mm). The upper surface is plain and undecorated whilst the lower has a series of scratched marks - most probably through movement in the soil. The piece is a mid-grey colour and is most likely to be a lead alloy. A direct parallel has not been found. The artefact measures 27.4mm lon…

An incomplete cast copper artefact of unknown function most probably of post medieval date (AD 1600-1800). The artefact is handmade being broadly rectangular in plan with four uneven sides and a square shaped hole through the centre (13.7mm x 14.5mm). It is undecorated although the upper and lower (top and bottom) faces differ both having slight or chamfered sides. It is possible that the central hole was formed by drilling the corners and using a file to shape. It has a mid-green well preserved thick patina although the surface is abraded by movement within the ploughzone. A direct …

A cast copper alloy fragment from a larger unidentified object of probable later Early Medieval date (AD 800-1200). The fragment is an irregular triangular shape in plan and slightly curved in profile - originally it would have been rectangular and the extant fragment represents a single corner. The fragment is pierced on one of its broken edges by a circular hole - which possibly may have held a rivet. The remains of a small rectangular sectioned rivet is present and preserved embedded through the copper alloy mount. This is possibly a repair. The upper surface is decorated with a ci…

A cast copper alloy fitting / plate of probable later Early Medieval or early Medieval date (AD 850-1250). The exact function of this piece is unknown - it has been bent from its original shape by movement in the plough soil. Originally it would have consisted or a rectangular plate from which triangular shaped wedge terminals extend each angled at 45 degrees from the horizontal and terminate in D shaped bulbous knops. The profile of the piece is now U shaped. The upper rectangular plate is decorated with a small neat border of rocker arm decoration, similar triangular shaped panels a…

A cast copper composite fragment of uncertain function and date - most probably associated with a copper alloy spoon or knife of post medieval date. The artefact comprises a tapering stem broken at one end and terminating in a bulbous corroded head at the other. Positioned half-way along the tapering shaft is a rectangular block very similar to a post medieval knife cap. It is suggested that the tang would have been set within a wooden handle and surmounted by a knife terminal - the bulbous corroded element could be the remains of an external knop similar to that seen on apostle spoon…
