An incomplete fragment from either a medieval or post medieval toilet implement / ear scoop or a broken medieval annular buckle fragment. The fragment is broken across the stem of the artefact and the break is patinated but unworn suggesting damage in antiquity with minimal movement in the plough soil. The opposite end widens and thins to form a curved U shaped terminal - which could be interpreted as either a scoop or a recessed terminal to allow the pin to rest on the frame of the buckle. The silver gilt fragment is an incomplete fragment from a larger object, most of the surviving fragment taking the form of a stylized animal head, modelled in relief. The animal head is characterized by a blunt, rounded snout with two circular recesses fore eyes, lips delineated by single incised lines, and backward projecting ear. The mouth bites a shaft of circular cross-section, while the neck has been modified to a flattened plate-like cross-section, with suggestion of an expanding flare.
