Four (4) thumbnail scrapers of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scrapers vary in colour from mid grey to pale brown. All are formed on D shaped flakes with high D shaped cross sections. Many of the scrapers dorsal faces have several broad removals / flake facets most probably caused by other flakes being removed for tool production. Several of the upper dorsal faces have retouch best described as long and covering pressure flaking. Around the exterior edges of all the scrapers are areas of dense neat regular well applied secondary retouch . This has been we…

Two (2) thumbnail scrapers of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). Both scrapers have been burnt and potentially reused as pot boilers now having a friable granular crazed surface. Both scrapers are formed of broad oval shaped tertiary flakes. The dorsal faces have several broad removals / flake facets most probably caused by other flakes being removed for tool production. Around the edges are areas of dense neat regular well applied secondary retouch . This has been well applied and forms a slightly serrated cutting / scraping edge that extends around three sides …

Two burnt later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2500 - 1500 BC) thumbnail scrapers formed on mid grey flakes of tertiary flint. The flake are broad and squat - originally being oval in plan but they are now both D shaped; in cross section they are broadly sub-rectangular. The flint flakes are well preserved - evidence for retouch or secondary working can be seen along the curved external edges of both the flakes. This retouch is short, sub-parallel and abrupt in nature. The retouch is well applied and controlled suggesting skill and competence. Both these scrapers have been burnt …

A thumbnail scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is formed on a fine, mid brown (toffee like) coloured good quality, tertiary oval shaped flake of flint. The ventral face shows the bulb and point of percussion as well as conchoidal ripples and bulbar scar; this shows that the flake was struck from a prepared striking platform. The dorsal face has several broad removals / flake facets most probably caused by other flakes being removed for tool production. Around the edges are areas of dense neat regular well applied secondary retouch . This ha…

The flake is broad and squat being recently snapped at the mid point - originally it would have been oval in plan but now is D shaped; in cross section it is broadly sub-rectangular. The flint flake is well preserved - evidence for retouch or secondary working can be seen along curved external edge of the flake. This retouch is sort, sub-parallel and abrupt in nature. Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2500 - 1500 BC) thumbnail scraper formed on a mid grey piece of tertiary debitage. The flint flake is broad and squat being oval in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. The flint flake is not well preserved - evidence for retouch or secondary working can be seen along two edges of the flake. This retouch is sort, sub-parallel and abrupt in nature. Thumb nail scrapers are seen as being a utility domestic scraping tool; they frequently occur in assemblages dating to the beaker period - Late Neolithic and early Bronze Age.

A thumbnail scraper of early to middle Neolithic date circa 4000 - 3500BC. The scraper is formed on a cream coloured tertiary flake of flint. The scraper is sub-triangular in plan, with a pointed distal end and rounded proximal end. The dorsal face has several removals / flake facets and the retouch is best described as being invasive, scaled and semi-abrupt. Less retouch has been applied to the edges on the ventral face which are mainly concentrated along two sides. The retouch on the ventral face is long, scaled and semi-abrupt. This type of scraper is the most common type of tool f…

A struck flint 'thumbnail' scraper of Neolithic date (3500-2000 BC). The scraper is broadly oval in shape being formed from on a relatively thick tertiary flake of mid-grey / cream coloured flint; it is irregular in cross section. The upper dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a large number of flake scars suggesting that this piece has been heavily worked / reworked. The ventral face is relatively flat with conchoidal ripples and the remains of the bulb of percussion. The striking platform has been reworked. The edges of the dorsal face have all be retouched with indirect percussion,…

A thumbnail scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is formed on a course yellow grey coloured poor quality, secondary flake of flint. The scraper is poorly preserved and has been shattered into two pieces probably by movement in the soil or possibly bracken flailing / strimming. The dorsal face has several removals / flake facets. These are most dense around the edge where a series of neat regular well applied secondary retouch can be seen. This has been well applied and forms a slightly serrated cutting / scraping edge that extends around thre…

A thumbnail scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is formed on a fine, mid grey / black coloured good quality, tertiary flake of flint. The ventral face shows the bulb scar and point of percussion as well as conchoidal ripples; the prepared platform has been removed by subsequent flaking. The dorsal face has several removals / flake facets. These are most dense around the edge where a series of neat regular well applied secondary retouch can be seen. A worked / knapped flint thumb nail scraper of later Neolithic date, circa 2700 - 2350 BC. The scraper is circular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The flint is heavily patinated in an even light grey / blue colour. Evidence of burning on all surfaces. No cortex is present indicating that the scraper was formed from the tertiary phase of working of the core. The dorsal and ventral faces of the scraper are uncertain. The retouch is heavily abraded and difficult to discern. The striking platform is intact with long, crossed abrupt retouch present on all other edges.
