Large fragment of a cast bronze / copper alloy sword blade of later Bronze Age date (1100 - 750 BC), The blade is rectangular in plan and tapers slightly in length. The long edges are abraded resulting in the loss of part of the cutting edge. The blade facets are present and the blade has been sharpened with long smooth marks from honing. The cross section of the blade is relatively flat with no sign of a raised central mid-rib. Both breaks (on the upper and lower edges) are relatively recent probably due to agriculture and the edges are fresh and unabraded - although they have slight…

An incomplete decorative copper-alloy sword hilt / guard of probable 18th or early 19th century. The section comprises a decorative guard including finger loops and quillions (one of which is broken) arranged in the Italian style. The central block is rectangular with a thick band above and a moulded socket below - which would have fitted to a slender grip and pommel. Through this block is a rectangular shaped hole (dimensions 11.5mm x 5.8mm) which would have allowed the square sectioned tang to pass. The central block is undecorated. Either side of the mid section are small loops / f…

A broken incomplete cast copper alloy guard from a small-sword or dress sword of late post medieval date (1650 - 1800). Approximately half the guard survives; it is an irregular oval shape in plan being concave / dished in profile and distorted from original shape. On the internal edge are the remains of a rectangular slot through which the tang of the blade passed. It is across this slot that the hilt guard is broken. The size of the tang cannot be assessed due to the damage. The upper and lower faces of the plate are decorated with a similar design comprising a seated figure in clas…

A cast copper alloy sword pommel or possibly a furniture finial of modern date. The style of the piece suggests that it fits well with the Neo-Gothic period. The pommel is broadly spherical in shape having a oval / circular perforation at the base and a small rectangular hole at the top. The pommel is hollow, it is filled with a large amount of iron corrosion from the remains of the tang, the tip of which passes through the square aperture at the top terminating in a neat pyramidal boss. The exterior of the pommel is decorated with a series of equally spaced curved arcs / circles whi…

The top is pierced by a square shaped hole (5.1mm x 5.7mm) whilst the base has a circular hole (diameter 7.8mm). The inside of the pommel is hollow. The exterior sides of the pommel are decorated with a late baroque cast design; comprising two scenes separated by ornate vegetal scrolling plumes. A cast copper alloy 'ogival' guard from the hilt of an Iron Age sword dated to the late Iron Age or very early (native) Roman period, c. 100 BC - 100 AD. The guard or hilt plate is complete and would have separated the hilt from the blade on the sword. In plan it is sub-rectangular (rectangular with tapering ends that terminate in rounded points) and in profile it is bowed (ogival or ogee shaped). The cast hole through the centre of the guard echoes the overall shape of the artefact, however the terminals are much more pronounced ending in sharp points. It is through this hole that th…

Incomplete cast copper alloy sword pommel of later Iron Age date (100 BC - 100 AD). The artefact is irregular in plan and profile; it is formed from a central rectangular vertical tube-like element (sub-rectangular in cross section) from which two centrally positioned sub-circular lobes expand. These lobes are integrally cast. Through the centre of the vertical element an iron rod (the tang) extends, this makes the copper alloy element a tube, sheath or sleeve. The tang extends from both the upper and lower edges and is broadly square in cross section; it seems to taper slightly from …

A near-complete cast copper alloy guard broken into three parts. The guard is likely to be from a small-sword or dress sword of late post medieval date (1650 - 1800). The guard is an irregular oval shape in plan being concave / dished in profile. The guard is heavily distorted and the breaks are relatively modern. The upper and lower surfaces are both heavily decayed - both are decorated with cast scroll work and have been gilt. The central perforation / hole is a cast sub-rectangular shape and would have accommodated the tang of the blade. The size of the tang cannot be assessed due …

Cast copper alloy pommel cap of early medieval / 7th – 9th century (600-850 AD) date. The pommel cap is of the ‘cocked hat’ type, being broadly sub-rectangular in plan and an irregular pyramid in profile. The pommel is incomplete; the two short sides are both broken and abraded. It is likely that these two points would have held small rivets to secure the pommel cap to the top of the knife / sword / dagger. The pommel is also hollow, the rear being concave and filled with the remains of iron tang. At the apex of the cap is a sub-rectangular slot which has a rim around the outer e…

Cast copper alloy sword pommel dating from the Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) period, probably 900-1100 AD. The pommel is hollow, sub-oval in plan and sub-triangular in profile. The underside of the pommel is convex; each side is decorated with five cast stepped rounded lobes which increase in height towards the centre. The pommel measures 52.2mm in length, 26.7mm width and is 14.5mm thick. It weighs 58.32 grams. The top of the pommel has a sub circular hole (8.3mm x 8mm) in it and the base an oval hole (33.4mm x 10.2mm). These allow the tang of the sword to attach to the pommel. The …
