Fragment from a copper alloy spur of probable later post medieval date (1550-1700). The fragment consists of the two arms (both broken near to the double perforated strap loops) and the rowel box. The rowel itself is lost. The arms are D shaped in cross section and taper toward their breaks. The area defined by the arms is very slight although movement in the soil might have made this narrower. The neck of the spur is formed at the mid point and has a slight D shaped projecting crest extending from the lower edge. The terminal of the rowel box expands from the mid-point of this place …

Fragment of a Post Medieval, cast copper alloy, two part rowel spur, comprising the rowel box and suspension arm which is curved to follow the shape of the wearer's heel and has an angular D shaped or triangular section. From the upper edge is an oval shaped projection which is likely to have projected through the heel of the spur. The external surface is decorated with punched annulets and the external edges of the rowel box within incised lines - possibly creating feathers or stockings. The form of this spur, particularly of its neck, allow it to be dated to c. 1630 with an English,…

Fragment from the terminal of a cast copper alloy spur of probably post medieval (1600-1750) date. The fragment consists of the pierced terminal and small fragment from the arm. The break is old and much worn; it is lentoid in cross section. The terminal is pierced in three places by cast holes, the upper and lower are functional with a diameter of 3.8mm whilst the middle is drilled and has a conical shape. The upper and lowe holes would have held hooked buckles or small mounts which would have fitted onto the straps which held the spur to the foot. These holes are relatively worn - e…

Fragment of a Post Medieval, cast copper alloy, rowel spur, comprising just the rowel box which is curved to follow the shape of the wearer's heel and has a triangular section. The external edge of the box is scalloped and the external surface is heavily erorded and corroded giving it a mid purple brown colour. The form of this spur, particularly of its neck, allow it to be dated to c. 1630 with an English, or western European, origin (Ellis, B, 'the spur' in E.Russell, ed. An incomplete post-Medieval multi-pointed spur rowel (c. 1550-1750). Both faces are convex and each point tapers in thickness and width. The distances between the points differs around the rowel and the depth of the point is also variable. In total there are ten points, five large ones and five small ones arranged alternatively. One of the large points is lost through an old break. The hole at the centre is irregular; being a worn oval with a diameter of 3.7mm. The rowel is a mid brownish green colour, but the surface patina has been removed in a number of places. A light green active…

Incomplete cast copper alloy rowel spur of probable late post medieval date, 1650 - 1800 AD. One of the two sides (arms) of the spur is broken and the separate iron rowel is missing. The spur is broadly a Y shaped in plan, with the two sides forming an angular U shape. The rowel from the spur is lost; presumably it was originally made of iron as the slot is encased with corroded iron. The rowel box and neck of the spur are sub-rectangular in plan and oval in cross section. The neck is V shaped in profile with a distinct very short (stubby) swan neck shape. The spur is broadly 'Y' shaped in plan with 'U-shaped' arms and right-angled rowel box projecting from the centre at a 90 degree angle. The upper surface of the arms is rounded. The inner face of the arms has a longitudinal groove at the centre, in which is contained iron corrosion. At the distal ends of each of the two arms, there is a double circular loop [each loop has an internal diameter of 6.5mm]; these are aligned vertically - in a figure-of-eight.
