A copper alloy ring with integrally cast hook of most probable later medieval or post medial date (AD 1400 - 1650). The ring is circular in form and relatively unabraded - from its lower edge extends an integrally cast tapering triangular projection which has been rolled back upon itself to form a blunt nosed hook. The ring has a mid grey green well formed surface patina which is chipped and abraded in places. A similar ring has been recorded by the PAS from Scole, Norfolk (NMS-BE3AF7) which is attached to the remains of a decorated 17th century sword strap mount. A similar ring is re…

Front plate of a cast copper alloy composite dagger chape of probable late medieval or early post-medieval date (1400 -1600). The chape is sub-rectangular in plan and in profile. The two long sides taper along the length terminating in a rounded globular base with a small projecting rounded knop at the base. The top of the chape is broken whilst the rear has a recessed lip to which the back plate would attach. This rear plate is lost. The front face of the chape is decorated with a number of cast motifs. These are all raised above the surface of the chape and have thus been more serio…

A late medieval or early post-medieval (1400-1600) chape from a dagger scabbard. The chape is made from folded copper-alloy sheet that has been crimped and hammered at the edges to create the form. It is an irregular sub-triangular shape in plan, with tapering edges and an irregular oval shape in cross section distorted by movement in the ploughsoil. The foot of the chape terminates in an oval shaped knop. TThe mouth of the chape is thickened and has a rounded shaped collar below this is a decorative double transverse ridge / band. The outer surface of the chape has also been tinned. …

A late medieval or early post-medieval (1400-1600) chape from a dagger scabbard. The chape is made from folded copper-alloy sheet that has been crimped and hammered at the edges to create the form. It is an irregular sub-rectangular shape, with tapering edges in plan and an irregular oval shape in cross section. The chape is formed from a single sheet of copper alloy which has been rolled to form a tube. The two edges of the tube overlap at the back but have been distorted from the form by movement in the ploughsoil. The lower edge of the tube has been irregularly folded over to close…

An incomplete cast copper alloy openwork two-piece 'folded' sword scabbard chape of medieval / late 1tth or 12th century date. The fragment is incomplete and heavily abraded; only a small area of original edge survives. The fragment is broadly rectangular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The front face is decorated with an interlace design which is augmented by areas of drilled openwork. The design is unclear, although it seems most likely to be a human figure either riding or wrestling a horse or stag. The body of the beast is incomplete and the figure seems to be resting / rid…

A cast copper alloy fragment of uncertain form or date. It is possible that the fragment could be from the chape of a scabbard of possible later Iron Age sword (c. 200-50 BC) although it is very small in size and therefore potentially undiagnostic. The fragment is broadly triangular in shape and oval in cross section. The fragment consists of an iron blade which is encased within a bronze / copper alloy sleeve. The fragment itself is broken along one edge and the iron is well preserved but in a laminating condition. There is no incised or cast decoration present and the external surf…

It is broadly sub-triangular in plan and sub- oval in cross section; it has been flattened / crushed and abraded in the ploughsoil. The chape is roughly sub-triangular in plan with the two long sides tapering to a thickened rounded point with a solid sub-spherical foot. Both long edges taper evenly along their length. An incomplete cast copper alloy dagger / knife scabbard chape dating to the Late Medieval or Early Post Medieval Period (c. 1400 to 1600 AD). The chape consists of the front decorate plate from the tip of a dagger scabbard; it is broadly sub triangular in shape and the section is U shaped. The base of the chape narrows and tapers being solid, the tip is eroded and extends to form a projecting knop. The long sides expand evenly and the upper edge is decorated with a series of notches although much of this detail is lost due to movement in the soil. The front face of the chape is decora…

A late medieval or early post-medieval (1400-1600), chape from a dagger scabbard. The chape is made from folded copper-alloy sheet that has been rolled and hammered at the edges to create the form. It is sub-triangular in plan and sub-rectangular / conical in section, however, it may have originally been sub-oval. The mouth of the chape has received the most damage which has removed all rivet holes for attachment. It is likely that there would have been a larger number of these which would have joined this chape to an organic scabbard. There is no evidence of other decoration present,…

A cast lead alloy (probably) late medieval or more probably a post-medieval (1450-1800) scabbard chape from a dagger. The chape is formed from a mid grey coloured metal alloy - most probably a lead alloy that seems to have been cast rather than formed from a single sheet of metal. It is broadly rectangular in plan with a tapered U shaped terminal; it is oval in cross section, however, it may have originally been sub-rectangular with rounded corners, having since been flattened / crushed and abraded in the ploughsoil. An incomplete cast lead alloy dagger chape, broken into two parts, dating to the Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval Period (c. 1400 to 1600 AD). There is an outside chance that this could be a modern reproduction / Gothic revival piece from the base of a decorative sheath for a letter opener.
The chape is sub triangular in shape, the base narrows and tapers being solid, the base is broken although possibly originally extending to a knop. The two sides extend above the mid and rear plates creating a rectangular shaped panel at the centre - presumably revealing the lather scabbard. …

A cast copper alloy fragment from the chape of a scabbard of a later Iron Age (La Tène III) sword (c. 200-50 BC). The fragment is irregular in plan and profile with a large fragment of iron passing through the centre of the piece; this iron fragment is probably the remains of the sword blade. In plan the piece is broadly sub-rectangular with irregular edges; in profile it is also irregular. Down the centre of the fragment, on one face only, is a large D shaped ridge.
