A small cast copper alloy ring of Roman - Modern date (50 - 1800) - most probably Roman AD 50-350. The ring is broadly circular in plan and has a flat oval cross section. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. All surfaces have been finished and there are no file marks present. there is also no evidence for internal wear facets on the ring from use. The ring is a dark-green colour with a well developed, relatively thick, patina that covers all surfaces but is abraded in places. As the size is small it maybe a simple finger-ring. The patination of the metal would sugge…

Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy ring of probable middle Bronze Age to later Iron Age date (1500 BC - 50 AD). The function of the ring is unknown although it is similar to examples associated with Bronze Age harness and also later Iron Age personal dress. The ring is circular in plan and irregular in section. The body of the ring has an oval cross section, however a deeply cast circumferential groove is present on the external edge of the upper half of the ring. This groove is probably cast and has a distinctive V shaped profile. At one end a small drilled hole is present piercing the ring transver…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy ring of unknown date - based on condition and form it is most probably of later prehistoric Late Bronze Age or Iron Age date (1000 BC - 50 AD), however there is some possibility that it may date from the Roman period (50 - 410 AD). The ring is complete and is circular in plan and sub-oval (D shaped) in cross section with a distinct internal flat edge. At one point there is a distinct internal wear facet, most probably from where it has been used to either suspend from a strap as some form of simple union. The ring is a mid brown colour with a well developed and heavil…

A cast copper alloy ring of unknown date, most probably medieval (1250-1600). The function of the ring is unknown, given its size, wear and distortion it is most likely to be from a harness fitting. The ring is oval in plan and has a distinct angular sub-triangular cross section. The width of the ring is relatively uniform. There is no decoration on either the outer or inner surfaces. The internal edge of the ring is worn suggesting that it may have been a belt ring used to tighten or secure a leather strap; being so slight it is possibly part of personal dress. A copper alloy ring - possibly a finger ring - of uncertain date. In style the ring is undiagnostic, it is very small with one side of the hoop being wider than the other - possibly suggesting a front and back of the hoop. The ring is a mid brown colour with an abraded and corroded surface patina - this patina is similar in condition and colour to a 3rd century Roman coin found within the same. The form is not diagnostically Roman. The ring measures 14.7mm diameter, width max 2.6mm min 1.4mm, thickness uniform 0.9mm, internal diameter 3.3mm. The ring weighs 0.54 grams

A copper alloy ring formed from a length of square sectioned wire twisted and knotted to form a hoop. The ends are folded back upon themselves and are rounded. The form is very neat and well defined not being distorted in the soil. The metal is a mid brown green colour with red coloured corrosion present. This form of this ring is long lived - being common in the early medieval / Viking period (9th and 10th centuries AD). However, earlier wire rings are formed on rounded wires - this example is likely to be modern. The ring measures: 24.5mm length, 22.7mm width and is 7.1mm thick…
